Job description

We are seeking a Database Administrator to play a key role within our Database team, where you’ll be a part of our Infrastructure and Operations team, working closely with all aspects of the Digital and Data Directorate such as servers, networks, developers and analysts. The Database Administrator will be a highly skilled individual, with responsibility for the design, implementation, configuration and on-going management and maintenance of all Database related technology within the department. This role, while performing the standard DBA tasks, will have a particular focus on performance tuning. What You’ll Be Doing Manage SQL Server databases and Oracle databases for the Force through multiple product lifecycle environments, from development to mission-critical production systems. Analyse, diagnose and resolve technical and database issues. Ensure timely resolution of incidents, problems and change as defined in the agreed Service Levels. Ensure that systems remain supportable, expandable, fit for purpose, and capable of delivering on-going business value and benefit. Manipulate, maintain, and scrutinise databases to provide information regarding enhancements, upgrades and software. Take innovative approaches to problem solving and deliver inventive and creative solutions. Why This Role Matters This role is central to ensuring our database estate remains reliable, secure, and capable of meeting changing policing demands. You will work with internal teams as well as 3rd parties to ensure that systems remain supportable, expandable, fit for purpose, and capable of delivering on-going business value and benefit. The current team is busy with the day-to-day work plus being instrumental in helping delivery multiple projects simultaneously, so this new role will have a performance optimisation focus. This involves analysing query execution plans, reducing response times, and minimizing resource usage.

Requirements

Proven knowledge/experience with either T-SQL or PL/SQL. Experience with writing DML/DQL with an understanding of TCL. Knowledge of performance tuning and optimisation, using native monitoring and troubleshooting tools. This incorporates the knowledge of, or specific interest in, techniques for making database operations faster and more efficient, with the ability to establish baselines for performance to isolate problems. Ability to work in a fast-moving environment with challenging deadlines, where priorities are subject to change at short notice. Professional and eloquent communications with an ability to form good working relationships across the organisation and with 3rd parties.
