Job description

We are looking for a Senior Full Stack Developer to design, build and maintain client websites, Shopify stores and custom web applications.

The work spans two areas. The first is WordPress and Shopify delivery: custom themes and plugins, store setup, app development and third-party integrations. The second is custom web application development: secure customer portals with role-based access, quotation and enquiry workflows, document management with controlled access, and user-facing dashboards.

This is a senior, hands-on role in a small team. You will own projects from discovery through to launch, make the technical calls on architecture and approach, work directly with clients, and help shape how we build. There is no layer between you and the decisions.

What you will be doing

  • Developing and maintaining responsive WordPress websites, including custom themes and plugins
  • Building and customising Shopify stores, including custom apps and third-party integrations
  • Building secure customer portals covering registration, login, password reset, account profiles and role-based permissions
  • Developing product catalogue interfaces, request-for-quotation workflows and enquiry history views
  • Building document management functionality covering upload, categorisation, search, filtering, access permissions and activity records
  • Designing and implementing user-facing dashboards and reporting views
  • Integrating AI tools and APIs to extend web functionality, including document data extraction and content workflows
  • Developing and integrating REST APIs
  • Working with MySQL and PostgreSQL, including schema design
  • Managing version control with Git and taking part in code review
  • Maintaining CI/CD pipelines and using automation tools such as Gulp
  • Testing across browsers and devices, fixing bugs and optimising performance
  • Building to web accessibility standards and UK data protection requirements
  • Supporting deployment, client handover and training

What we are looking for

This is a senior role, so we are looking for someone who has delivered complete projects end to end and can work without close supervision. That said, we care more about what you can do than about a specific number of years. You do not need every item below. If you have a strong combination of these skills and can show us work you have built, we would like to hear from you.

Core technologies

  • PHP
  • WordPress, including custom theme and plugin development
  • Shopify, including store setup, custom apps and integrations
  • JavaScript (ES6 and later), and React.js or a similar modern framework
  • HTML, CSS and responsive front-end development
  • REST API development and integration
  • MySQL or PostgreSQL, Please include links to live projects or GitHub repositories showing your work, particularly anything involving WordPress, Shopify, custom web applications or AI integrations. Tell us briefly about one project you are proud of and what your specific contribution was., * Have you successfully built and deployed a custom Shopify App or WordPress Plugin from scratch?

Requirements

  • Git for version control
  • Familiarity with Agile delivery
  • Experience with CI/CD and build or automation tools such as Gulp, Webpack or Vite
  • Clear written and spoken English, and the ability to explain technical decisions to clients who are not technical

Also useful, if you have it

  • Experience with AI tools and APIs, for example OpenAI or Anthropic, including document data extraction or AI-assisted development
  • Building authentication, user roles and permission systems
  • B2B portals, client areas or extranets
  • Document management or file handling systems, including permissions and audit records
  • Web application security, including common OWASP vulnerabilities
  • UK GDPR as it applies to web applications
  • CSS preprocessors such as SASS or LESS
  • Web accessibility standards (WCAG)
  • Agency or consultancy experience across multiple concurrent clients, * WordPress: 5 years (required)
