Job description

The Passive Optical Network (PON) Field Engineer is responsible for auditing, testing, and validating outside plant (OSP) fiber infrastructure to ensure network records match physical reality in the field. This role bridges hands-on fiber testing with engineering documentation, working closely with planners and network engineers to keep fiber route records, spare capacity, and equipment configurations accurate and audit-ready. The ideal candidate combines strong technical fiber skills with GIS/mapping proficiency and the discipline to maintain clean, reliable documentation across a large-scale fiber footprint., * Audit Optical Distribution Frames (ODFs), Fiber Access Points (FAPs), and other passive optical infrastructure for accuracy against network records

  • Perform OTDR testing to verify fiber continuity, identify faults, and confirm spare fiber availability
  • Record, document, and update OTDR test results and spare fiber counts, submitting findings to planners and engineering teams for record correction
  • Use GIS mapping tools, KMZ files, as-built drawings, and CAD software to validate and update network diagrams and route layouts
  • Identify discrepancies between as-built documentation and actual field conditions, and escalate/resolve accordingly
  • Collaborate with project managers, planners, and design engineers to support fiber build accuracy and capacity planning
  • Support right-of-way, permitting, and route planning documentation as needed
  • Maintain organized, audit-ready records of all fiber testing, splicing, and infrastructure changes
  • Travel extensively across Texas to OSP sites, central offices, and cabinet/FAP locations to conduct field audits

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience in fiber optic network installation, splicing, testing, or OSP field engineering
  • Hands-on experience with OTDR testing and troubleshooting
  • Working knowledge of GIS mapping software, KMZ files, and CAD tools for network documentation
  • Familiarity with Optical Distribution Frames (ODFs), Fiber Access Points (FAPs), and passive optical network components
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and as-built diagrams
  • Strong attention to detail and record-keeping discipline - this role is documentation-critical
  • Comfortable with 100% travel and working independently in the field while coordinating remotely with planning/engineering teams
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation for statewide travel, * CCNA certification or equivalent networking credential
  • Certified Fiber Splicer or equivalent fiber certification
  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical field (Industrial Technology, Telecommunications, Engineering, or related), or equivalent hands-on experience
  • Prior experience with major carrier or ISP fiber networks (e.g., Verizon, AT&T, or similar)
  • Experience supporting network audits, capacity planning, or as-built reconciliation projects
  • Prior experience working statewide or regionally in a travel-heavy field role
