Job description

Chaos Labs builds infrastructure for organizations adopting AI at scale. Our products help organizations understand their AI work, capture the knowledge it generates, and turn everyday AI activity into intelligence they own.

Reporting directly to the Product Lead and working closely with our VP of Sales and Engineering team, we are looking for a deeply technical Forward Deployed Engineer to operate at the intersection of our customers and our platform.

Today, the role is centered on joining customer conversations early, developing a deep understanding of the Chaos Labs platform, evaluating technical feasibility, and helping customers and our internal teams reason through architecture and implementation tradeoffs. You will prototype, build, and debug when hands-on work is the fastest way to reach an answer.

As the platform evolves, the role will grow into more complex customer deployments involving work units, company-specific context, integrations, evaluation, fine-tuning, and optimization. You will help define how Chaos Labs approaches these problems and turn early solutions into technical patterns that can scale.

We operate with little bureaucracy and expect extreme agency. We are looking for someone who takes ownership of technical problems, develops a point of view, and works across customers, Product, and Engineering to find a path forward., * Lead technical discovery and solution design in early customer conversations alongside the Product Lead and VP of Sales.

  • Evaluate feasibility and tradeoffs across architecture, APIs, integrations, data, authentication, security, infrastructure, and deployment.
  • Prototype, build, and debug technical solutions, working closely with our engineering team to turn promising approaches into reliable implementations.
  • Own technical problems end to end, developing a deep understanding of both the Chaos Labs platform and the environments in which it must operate.

Requirements

  • 6+ years of experience in software engineering, forward deployed engineering, customer engineering, or a similarly technical customer facing role.
  • Strong software-engineering and systems-design fundamentals, with the ability to write, debug, and review production-quality code.
  • Deep experience with APIs, integrations, data systems, cloud infrastructure, and modern application architecture.
  • Strong production experience in Python and/or TypeScript, with the ability to build and debug across a modern application stack.
  • Proficiency with SQL, APIs, integrations, authentication, cloud infrastructure, and production observability.
  • Hands-on experience building AI-powered applications, including working with model APIs, context management, tool calling, retrieval, evaluation, and cost-quality-latency tradeoffs.
  • The ability to move between system architecture, detailed implementation, and direct technical conversations with customers.
  • Strong communication skills and the credibility to work directly with customer engineers, internal engineers, and business stakeholders.
  • Exceptional agency and comfort operating in a lean, fast-moving environment where the solution is not always immediately apparent., * Based in NYC with the ability to work from our Brooklyn office, or the ability to work remotely, with travel up to 30% of the year to collaborate in person with the team.
  • Excellent written and spoken English, with the ability to communicate complex technical decisions clearly to both engineering and business audiences.
  • Familiarity with profiling tools and performance optimization techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
