Job description

As a Senior Network Tooling Engineer, you’ll shape and enhance the monitoring, alerting, and automation capabilities that underpin critical HMRC network services. You’ll play a key role in evolving tooling and lab environments - driving efficiency, resolving complex incidents, and collaborating with a wide range of technical stakeholders to deliver continuous improvements. This is a great opportunity for a proactive engineer who enjoys innovation, solving complex challenges, and making a meaningful impact across a large-scale, high-profile network estate.

The successful candidate must be eligible for, and able to obtain and maintain, SC UK Government Security Clearance.

What you’ll be doing

  • Act as a key player in supporting and enhancing tooling, networks, and lab environments across the HMRC estate, ensuring seamless monitoring and automation performance.
  • Configure, deploy, and manage virtualised environments (including VMware vCenter), driving stability, scalability, and effective troubleshooting across complex systems.
  • Bring network simulations to life using virtualisation tools such as EVE-NG or CML to support testing, innovation, and continuous improvement.
  • Lead technical investigations and provide expert oversight on changes, ensuring quality, minimising risk, and enabling smooth transition of new services into live support.
  • Collaborate closely with HMRC and supplier teams to drive continual service improvement while ensuring alignment with BT and HMRC standards, policies, and best practice.

Requirements

  • Experience supporting and configuring network monitoring and automation tooling, with an understanding of platforms such as Netscout, Riverbed, or similar
  • Confidence in network troubleshooting and packet analysis across enterprise environments (LAN, WAN, VLAN, WLAN)
  • Familiarity with scripting and automation using technologies such as Python, PowerShell, or similar, alongside exposure to CI/CD and tools like Ansible or GitLab
  • Knowledge of virtualised environments and infrastructure, including administration and support of platforms such as VMware, Hyper-V, Active Directory, or databases (SQL/Oracle)
  • Ability to investigate, diagnose, and resolve complex issues using structured troubleshooting and root cause analysis approaches

Desirable Skills / Experience

  • Effective communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to build relationships, work across teams, and contribute to technical leadership and service improvement initiatives
