Job description
The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is seeking an Informatics Programmer Analyst to support clinical research through advanced data extraction, programming, analysis, and management.
In this role, you will interpret complex requirements and detailed specifications to identify appropriate fields for data extraction, apply analytical techniques for data validation and cleaning, and prepare large datasets for in-depth analysis. You will select appropriate patient cohorts, develop sophisticated programming strategies to configure data according to researchers’ specifications, and validate results to ensure they meet research expectations.
Using analytical and programming tools such as Python, SQL, SAS, R, or Stata, you will work with electronic medical records, health services data, and claims data to provide a robust analytical foundation for research projects.
Key responsibilities include:
- Organize, curate, validate, and prepare complex datasets for research and analysis.
- Interpret detailed specifications and identify appropriate data fields for extraction.
- Select patient cohorts and configure data according to researchers’ specifications.
- Apply analytical techniques for data validation, cleaning, statistical analysis, and modeling.
- Work with large electronic medical record, health services, and claims datasets.
- Produce detailed reports, charts, tables, and figures that clearly communicate findings.
- Collaborate with researchers, Principal Investigators, and lead investigators to refine analyses based on feedback.
- Work closely with PhD Statisticians when complex statistical analyses are required.
- Prepare analytical results for publication and dissemination.
- Effectively manage and interpret large volumes of data to support meaningful research insights., The Clinical Data Research Consultants group’s services include administration of Data Use Agreements for the reuse of CMS and Medicaid data, customized data extractions from UCSF health systems, and a federated data steward program that supports compliance and establishes best-practice standards for analysts accessing health system data outside of central IT.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in biological science, computational/programming, or a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
- 3+ years of experience with data manipulation and data quality control.
- 3+ years of experience in statistical analysis and modeling.
- Proficiency and programming experience in SAS, Python, R, or SQL.
- Experience working with large datasets greater than 50 GB.
- Experience working with electronic medical/health services data, such as SEER, EPIC, or claims data.
- Experience working in a research environment.
- Thorough knowledge of bioinformatics methods, applications programming, web development, and data structures.
- Thorough knowledge of bioinformatics programming design, modification, and implementation.
- Understanding of relational databases, web interfaces, and operating systems.
- Thorough knowledge of web, application, and data security concepts and methods.
- Research skills sufficient to evaluate alternative solutions and develop recommendations.
- Strong project management skills.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to work with technical and non-technical personnel across multiple fields and organizational levels.
- Ability to communicate technical information clearly and concisely.
- Ability to interface with management regularly.
- Self-motivated with the ability to work independently or as part of a team, learn quickly, meet deadlines, and demonstrate strong problem-solving skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Thorough knowledge of modern biology and the applicable field of research.
- Advanced degree in a quantitative discipline and/or equivalent experience/training., * Do you have at least 3 years of experience with data manipulation and data quality control?
- Do you have at least 3 years of experience in statistical analysis and modeling?
- Which of the following programming languages or tools do you have professional programming experience with: SAS, Python, R, or SQL?
- Do you have experience working with datasets larger than 50 GB and electronic medical or health services data, such as SEER, EPIC, or claims data?
