Job description

The BI Developer is responsible for designing, building, and maintaining semantic models and reporting solutions within RPM Living’s Microsoft Fabric environment. This role focuses primarily on Power BI development and Fabric semantic modeling, translating business requirements into scalable, well-governed data models and intuitive reports and dashboards that support decision-making across the organization. Working knowledge of Tableau is a valued additional skill, as the role may support ongoing reporting needs during the platform’s transition from Tableau to Power BI; prior professional experience with Tableau is not required., * Design, develop, and maintain Power BI reports, dashboards, and semantic models within the Microsoft Fabric medallion architecture (bronze, silver, gold, and semantic layers).

  • Build and optimize Fabric semantic models, including relationships, measures, calculation groups, and row-level security, to support enterprise reporting needs.
  • Position the semantic layer to support emerging LLM-driven data delivery strategies, structuring models and metadata so business users can reliably query and interact with data through natural language and AI-assisted tools.
  • Partner with business stakeholders to gather requirements and translate them into well-structured data models and visually clear, actionable reports.
  • Write and optimize DAX measures and Power Query (M) transformations to support accurate and performant reporting.
  • Collaborate with the Data Engineering team to ensure semantic models are built on reliable, well-governed gold-layer data sources.
  • Support the organization’s transition from Tableau to Power BI, including assisting with report migration and validation where needed.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot existing Tableau reports and workbooks as needed during the transition period.
  • Apply data visualization best practices to ensure reports are intuitive, performant, and aligned with RPM Living’s reporting standards.
  • Document semantic models, data lineage, and report logic to support governance and knowledge transfer across the team.
  • Monitor report and dataset performance, identifying and resolving refresh failures, slow queries, and model inefficiencies.
  • Leverage AI tools such as Claude to accelerate report development, DAX authoring, and data model documentation.
  • Participate in code and model reviews to ensure consistency, reusability, and adherence to semantic modeling standards.
  • Stay current on Microsoft Fabric and Power BI platform updates, recommending adoption of new features where they add value.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business Analytics, or a related field. Experience may substitute for education.
  • Three years of experience developing reports and dashboards in Power BI.
  • Hands-on experience building semantic models, including DAX measures, relationships, and row-level security, ideally within Microsoft Fabric.
  • Experience working within a Microsoft Azure data ecosystem is a plus.
  • Knowledge of Tableau is preferred but not required; willingness to learn and support Tableau reporting during the platform transition is expected.
  • Knowledge of SQL for querying and validating data sources.
  • Knowledge of data visualization best practices, including layout, accessibility, and user experience.
  • Skilled in Power Query (M) for data transformation and shaping.
  • Skilled in dimensional modeling and semantic layer design principles.
  • Ability to write clean, efficient DAX and troubleshoot performance issues within complex data models.
  • Ability to manage multiple report requests and prioritize work in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of detail with a strong sense of ownership over data accuracy and report quality.
  • Ability to work collaboratively cross-functionally with engineering, product, and business teams.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, with the ability to translate business requirements into technical solutions.

Qualifications: Physical Requirements:

  • May be required to sit for extended periods of time
  • May occasionally be required to lift or carry items such as files or office supplies weighing up to 15 pounds
  • Must be able to operate a computer, keyboard, mouse, and other office equipment
  • Must be able to read documents, computer screens, and data
  • Must be able to hear and understand verbal communications in person and over the phone or computer
