Montefiore is seeking a Senior Manager, Workday Payroll Technology to lead the functional strategy, governance, and operational excellence of our Workday Payroll platform. This is a working management role responsible for overseeing a team of Workday Payroll consultants and analysts, ensuring the platform reliably supports payroll operations across a large, complex health system while driving continuous improvement, compliance, and enhancement initiatives.
This role is functional/operational in nature - the Senior Manager is expected to direct, prioritize, and quality-check the work of consulting resources, translate business and compliance requirements into technical direction, and serve as the primary escalation point between Payroll, HR, Finance, and IT stakeholders., Team & Vendor Leadership
- Manage a team of Workday Payroll consultants (internal and third-party/staff augmentation), including work assignment, prioritization, and performance oversight
- Serve as the primary point of accountability for consultant deliverables, ensuring work is scoped, tracked, and delivered on time and within budget
- Manage relationships with Workday and any implementation/staffing partners, including SOW development, invoicing oversight, and vendor performance reviews
Platform Ownership & Governance
- Own the functional roadmap for Workday Payroll, including tax, UKG time tracking integration, garnishments, off-cycle processing, retro pay, and payroll accounting
- Establish and enforce change management, testing, and release governance for all payroll configuration changes
- Maintain system documentation, configuration standards, and audit-readiness across the payroll module
Payroll Operations Support
- Partner directly with Payroll Operations leadership to ensure the platform supports accurate, timely, and compliant pay processing for a multi-entity, multi-union health system workforce
- Lead root cause analysis and resolution for payroll system issues, ensuring proper prioritization based on business and compliance impact
- Oversee quarter-end, year-end, and tax filing readiness activities from a systems perspective
Compliance & Risk
- Ensure Workday Payroll configuration remains compliant with federal, New York State, and local tax and wage regulations, as well as union/CBA pay rules
- Partner with Internal Audit, Compliance, and Legal on system controls, SOX-related requirements, and data privacy standards
- Maintain a proactive posture on Workday releases, identifying impacts to payroll configuration and compliance obligations
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Act as the primary liaison between Payroll, HR Technology (HCM/Benefits), Finance, and IT on all Workday Payroll-related initiatives
- Support integration design and issue resolution with upstream/downstream systems (time and attendance, general ledger, benefits, third-party tax and garnishment vendors)
- Represent Payroll Technology in broader Workday governance forums and enterprise system initiatives, * The selected candidate is expected to work onsite approximately 2-3 days per week and participate in additional onsite meetings, workshops, project kickoffs, and other business-critical activities as needed.
- Candidates should reside within a reasonable commuting distance of the Yonkers office and be able to maintain a consistent onsite presence.
- Limited local travel may be required to support payroll and technology initiatives across Montefiore Health System locations, including White Plains, Nyack, Mount Vernon, New Rochelle, and other regional facilities.
- Travel is generally planned in advance and is expected to be occasional rather than frequent. Overnight travel is not typically required.

- Payroll runs accurately and on time, with system issues identified and resolved proactively rather than reactively
- Consultant resources are efficiently deployed against a clear, prioritized roadmap
- Montefiore maintains strong audit and compliance posture across all Workday Payroll configuration
- Stakeholders across Payroll, HR, and Finance view the Workday Payroll Technology function as a reliable, responsive partner
Requirements
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Human Resources, Business, or related field, or equivalent professional experience
- 7+ years of experience supporting Workday Payroll in a functional/techno-functional capacity, including at least 2-3 years in a people leadership or team management role
- Demonstrated experience overseeing consultants or vendor resources on Workday Payroll configuration and projects
- Deep functional knowledge of Workday Payroll, including pay components, tax setup, garnishments, off-cycles, retro pay, and payroll accounting
- Experience supporting payroll in a large, multi-entity or unionized environment
- Strong understanding of payroll compliance requirements (federal, NY State, local)
- Excellent stakeholder management skills, with the ability to translate between technical teams and payroll/HR business leaders
- Ability to work in a hybrid environment with regular onsite attendance in Yonkers, NY, and occasional travel to other Montefiore Health System locations.
Preferred
- Experience in a healthcare or academic medical center environment
- Workday Payroll certification(s)
- Experience with UKG Time Tracking and/or Workday Payroll integrations (e.g., ADP tax filing, garnishment vendors, UKG)
