Job description
The Senior Database Administrator (Database Administrator 3) performs advanced database administration, tuning, migration, and infrastructure management for complex data models, workflows, and reports. Working within a state health agency’s cloud platform (Azure/AWS) alongside full-stack Java applications, this role focuses on migrating data from legacy Oracle applications to Microsoft SQL schemas and converting Oracle Stored Procedures and Functions to Azure SQL. The administrator ensures database stability, security, disaster recovery, and high availability while collaborating closely within an Agile (Scrum) software development lifecycle (SDLC)., Database Administration & Performance Tuning
- Perform advanced database tuning, query optimization, indexing, and customization to increase processing performance and resolve bottlenecks.
- Execute database installations, patching, upgrades, and troubleshooting to maintain system health and reliability.
- Implement robust database backup, retrieval, and recovery processes to mitigate hardware or software failures and ensure business continuity.
- Configure and manage security at rest and in motion, control user access, and enforce administrative database policies.
- Establish and maintain disaster recovery (DR) procedures, high-availability clustering, load balancing, replication, and data archiving.
Database Design, Modeling, & Migration
- Build and maintain logical and physical data models, translating business requirements into relational structures and database schemas.
- Plan and execute data migrations and conversions, extracting legacy Oracle application data, transforming it, and loading (ETL) it into Microsoft SQL and Azure collections.
- Convert legacy database logic, including Oracle Stored Procedures and Functions, into Azure SQL compliant syntax.
- Design, configure, and maintain test database environments for development teams, including managing database libraries and schemas.
Strategic Collaboration & Accessibility Compliance
- Collaborate within an Agile (Scrum) environment, partnering with developers, system administrators, and business stakeholders.
- Maintain data dictionaries, ensure uniformity of definition standards, and evaluate stakeholders’ requests for new data elements.
- Support accessibility compliance (such as EIR Accessibility standards) across database administration user interfaces, reporting outputs, and input tools.
- Provide daily and weekly progress updates, effort estimations, and technical project planning to development supervisors.
Requirements
- 10 or more years of professional database administration and engineering experience.
- 8 or more years of hands-on experience administering Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server database systems.
- 8 or more years of experience managing relational database administration (RDBA) in large-scale enterprise environments.
- 8 or more years of experience in database design, data analysis, schema structures, and performance tuning.
- 8 or more years of experience designing enterprise-class applications or data services.
- 8 or more years of experience creating highly detailed technical and functional design documentation.
- 8 or more years of experience working within the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) using Agile methodologies (such as Scrum).
- 8 or more years of experience supporting multi-tier system and application development (such as SOA, Microservices, or 3-Tier architectures).
- Must currently reside in the State of Texas and be local to the Austin area, living within a 50-mile radius of the primary work location.
- Ability to successfully pass a pre-employment security review to determine public sector employment eligibility., * 8 or more years of experience managing large-volume databases, high-availability clusters, and disaster recovery infrastructure.
- 6 or more years of experience working with Microsoft Azure cloud environments.
- 6 or more years of experience performing Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL) data processes from diverse sources into Azure SQL.
- 3 or more years of experience utilizing DevOps technologies, including CI/CD pipelines, Git-based workflows, and automated deployment tools.
- 3 or more years of experience working within Java/J2EE enterprise development environments.
- Professional Azure certifications and/or Database Administrator (DBA) Associate credentials., * Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex database topologies for business and technical audiences.
- Working knowledge of Electronic and Information Resources (EIR) Accessibility standards and assistive technologies.
- Outstanding system diagnostics, debugging, and data-analysis capabilities.
- Collaborative team player who can manage workloads, mitigate technical risks, and work independently.
