Job description

We are searching for an experienced Senior Software Engineer II who can design and build both consumer-facing and enterprise operational applications for the restaurant industry. Our platform runs globally across Taco Bell, KFC and Pizza Hut using peer-to-peer replication, network service discovery, and embedded web servers to keep restaurants running even when the network doesn’t - all built on a 100% Kotlin codebase with a modern Android stack including Jetpack Compose. As a Senior Software Engineer II, you will own delivery of features end to end, contribute to engineering decisions within your area, and help ensure our users’ and brands’ needs are met.

Your day-to-day:

  • Engineering Execution:
  • Use AI dev tooling as part of your daily workflow to improve productivity across development, testing and documentation, while maintaining full ownership of quality, security and correctness.
  • Implement and uphold MVVM architecture patterns and write comprehensive unit and integration tests to keep the codebase clean, testable and maintainable.
  • Own features end to end - design, implementation, testing and deployment (CI/CD) - with the quality bar of a high-volume, always-on environment.
  • Build an Android-based point-of-sale and operations platform that is a critical tool in tens of thousands of restaurants around the world.
  • Problem Solving:
  • Scale and optimize the platform to support worldwide expansion across various markets.
  • Tune performance with the consideration that our app runs potentially all day long.
  • Interface with and support a myriad of hardware devices while building abstractions around them.
  • Solve problems with new and emerging technologies including distributed databases, real-time syncing, message queues, and distributed transactions.
  • Communication and Collaboration:
  • Self-direct and prioritize your own work, and contribute to a team culture where engineers are excited to show up to work.
  • Communicate complex topics/problems in an articulate manner.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with product managers, designers, quality assurance and brand teams to deliver cohesive features across KFC, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell.

Requirements

  • BA/BS or higher in Computer Science or a related STEM field.
  • 5+ years hands-on experience building robust mobile software.
  • Strong Android fundamentals: solid knowledge of the Android SDK, application lifecycle and platform behaviors, with good working knowledge of Kotlin and modern Android development, including Jetpack Compose.
  • A proven history of writing robust software, including a solid grasp of and respect for proper architectures and testing strategies.
  • Regular use of AI dev tooling in your daily workflow, with the judgment to verify its output and know when to rely on it.
  • Willingness and ability to own/manage specific aspects of the development process including implementation, testing, or deployment (CI/CD).

We prefer:

  • Exposure to distributed systems and peer-to-peer architecture.
  • Restaurant tech, retail POS, or any in-store operational system background.
  • Published native Android apps in your portfolio.
  • Strong background in reactive UI patterns (Kotlin Flow/Coroutines, Jetpack Compose); RxJava experience also translates well.
  • Experience building payment systems or integrating with hardware peripherals including printers and payment terminals.
  • Experience with both SQL and NoSQL databases, and knowledge of their tradeoffs.
  • Startup experience.
  • Social proof of your passion for software development (blog, personal apps or websites, meetup presentations, community involvement).
