Job description
BusinessRate turns public customer reviews into scores and rankings for local businesses. We collect review data at scale, score each business, rank it against its local competitors, and recognize the top performers in their market.
We’re profitable and growing, with an engineering team of four. Everything - the data pipelines, the web applications, the payment flows, the internal tooling, the infrastructure - is built and maintained in house.
The role
You’d be writing code day to day and owning features end to end. You won’t be handed a narrow slice of the product - with a team this size you’ll work across the data pipelines, the customer-facing application, and the internal tooling, and you’ll be trusted to make calls on your own work.
This is the level where you stop needing someone to check the shape of your solution before you start. You’ll still have senior engineers to talk problems through with, and your pull requests still get reviewed carefully, but the expectation is that you can take a feature from a rough description to something in production without much hand-holding.
The data side is genuinely complex - large partitioned tables, queries that need to stay fast as volumes grow, and pipelines processing substantial amounts of data. There’s also a customer-facing web application, payment flows, and internal dashboards, all of which need to be reliable.
What you’ll do
-
Build and maintain backend services and APIs, and own the design decisions on your own work
-
Build customer-facing pages and internal dashboards with Next.js and tRPC
-
Write and debug SQL against large datasets, and learn what makes queries fast or slow at our scale
-
Take features from an initial description through to production
-
Review other engineers’ pull requests, including our junior developers’
-
Help keep our checkout and payment flows reliable
Requirements
You should have:
-
A few years building and supporting production TypeScript and Node.js applications
-
Solid SQL and relational database skills - you should be comfortable reading a query plan, even if you haven’t tuned a partitioned table before
-
Experience building real frontends with React, ideally Next.js
-
Comfort with AI-assisted development tools alongside solid engineering practices - we use them regularly and expect the same care with code written that way
-
The judgement to work through a problem on your own, and the sense to ask early when you’re stuck
Nice to have:
-
tRPC, Fastify, or similar typed API layers
-
Docker and modern deployment pipelines (we use Render)
-
Stripe or other payments experience
-
Any exposure to data pipelines or ETL
-
A CS degree, a bootcamp, or no formal background at all - we care about what you can do
Benefits & conditions
- Dental insurance
- Health insurance
- Paid time off
