Job description

We’re looking for someone who gets fired up by broken quality and safety processes and can’t stand watching a manufacturing business drown in paper, tribal knowledge, reactive audits, and slow, outdated compliance workflows.

Acme Machine & Welding (Punxsutawney) and ALKAB Machine & Welding (New Kensington) are two high-mix, low-volume powerhouses in Western Pennsylvania. We machine, weld, and fabricate some of the biggest, toughest parts in heavy industry - large horizontal and vertical boring mills, massive lathes, complex heavy weldments, precision fabrication, electromechanical assemblies, deployable Millwright service, and aftermarket Manitowoc crane/dragline parts. We’ve been doing this for generations, and we’re not slowing down.

Right now our quality and EHS functions support a growing multi-site operation with real industrial complexity. But too many processes still live in paper, email chains, tribal knowledge, and reactive fire drills. Document control is messy. Training records are hard to find. Nonconformances and corrective actions don’t always close cleanly. Audit readiness is a scramble instead of a system. Job quality data doesn’t flow as cleanly as it should from the floor into the ERP. And good people spend too much time fighting the system instead of protecting the team and raising the bar.

That’s where you come in.

Phase 1 - Own & Fix Core Quality + EHS Processes (Right Now)

You will jump into the quality and EHS functions and attack every process with zero patience for waste. Map the entire system - from document control and inspection practices through nonconformance, corrective action, training, incident investigation, and management review. Simplify it. Build self-service workflows so supervisors and quality people can get what they need without chasing forms or waiting on gatekeepers. Turn compliance from a necessary overhead into a competitive advantage that opens doors to ISO, AS9100, medical, and defense work. Work side-by-side with operations, estimating, HR, and leadership and give them clean, real-time visibility so they can move faster with confidence.

Phase 2 - Build the Enterprise System & Scale (Once Phase 1 is Rocking)

When the core processes are humming, you expand your ownership:

  • Build and lead a high-performing quality and EHS team that moves at the speed of the business
  • Drive full automation of quality, training, NCR/CAPA, and safety workflows inside ECI M1 - and intelligently extend it with self-service tools and simple automation where they create real leverage
  • Own the certification roadmap and lead the enterprise toward ISO 9001, then AS9100, ISO 13485, NADCAP, and any other frameworks that unlock higher-value customers
  • Create clear ownership, standard work, dashboards, and metrics so leadership always has accurate, timely visibility into risk, quality performance, and safety results
  • Partner tightly with operations, estimating, and commercial teams so our quality and compliance capabilities become part of how we quote, sell, and deliver - creating one cohesive customer experience
  • Lead quality and compliance integration for future acquisitions so new sites come online clean and consistent
  • Manage the external EHS consulting relationship with clear priorities and real accountability - use them as a force multiplier, never a permanent crutch

You will be the person who makes quality and compliance a force multiplier for growth instead of a necessary overhead., This is a high-visibility role with a clear path: first transform the processes, then lead the function and scale it across the enterprise. You will work across both our Punxsutawney and New Kensington facilities in the Greater Pittsburgh region. The problems are real. The impact will be obvious. And the people you’ll work with are the real deal.

Requirements

  • Gets genuinely excited about process maps, ERP configuration, self-service systems, and killing unnecessary steps
  • Has strong quality and/or EHS acumen and a deep understanding of manufacturing environments, job shops, and multi-site operations
  • Sees ECI M1 (or any ERP) as a tool to be bent to the business’s will, not the other way around
  • Has a strong bias for action and hates watching capable people drown in paper, tribal knowledge, and reactive compliance
  • Can walk into a traditional manufacturing environment and earn respect by delivering results that make the next day an easier day
  • Wants real ownership and visible impact - not another “keep the binders updated and pass the audit” compliance role

If you’ve ever looked at a messy document control system, a paper-heavy training process, a reactive audit scramble, or a quality team stuck in firefighting mode and thought “I could fix this and automate it,” this is your chance to prove it on real work for a real industrial company.
