Job description
We are looking for a Reliability Engineer with strong electro-mechanical expertise to join our vehicle systems reliability team. In this role, you will play a key part in designing reliability into our groundbreaking automotive vision hardware systems, including camera cleaning mechanisms, condensation management, pneumatic systems, and supporting enclosures, that are critical to autonomy, sensor availability, and vehicle performance.
You will follow the reliability lifecycle of these multi-domain systems from concept through design, development, manufacturing, and field operation, designing-in and confirming exceptional reliability at every stage. These systems operate at the intersection of mechanical, thermal, electrical, and fluid domains, and you must be comfortable reasoning across all of them.
This role is highly engaging and cross-functional. You will collaborate with mechanical design, optical engineering, thermal engineering, controls and software, and manufacturing teams to understand emerging architectures and identify reliability risks early. You will be responsible for defining appropriate stress conditions, spanning temperature, humidity, solar load, vibration, chemical exposure, and more, and creating test plans to validate reliability under real-world and accelerated conditions. You will provide reliability analyses and apply first-principles engineering knowledge to drive design improvements.
You must have a genuine passion for engineering products that will fundamentally change the world, and you must be self-motivated with the desire to push boundaries. If you have strong multi-domain technical fundamentals, excellent problem-solving skills, and a genuine fascination for engineering, this is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the cutting-edge technology of Tesla s products and shape the future. It comes naturally to you to deliver results under high pressure with tight schedules.
The level of this position will be determined at the time of the interview.
- Apply solid knowledge of reliability methods and multi-domain (thermo-mechanical-electrical) engineering to design accelerated test plans for design validation and demonstration of reliability growth across vision hardware systems
- Analyze field usage and environmental conditions, including temperature, humidity, UV, dust, salt, mud, and chemical exposure, to optimize design requirement setting, durability specifications, and test methods
- Facilitate and lead design FMEA sessions to assess product risks across mechanical, thermal, electrical, and fluid system domains; deep dive into the governing physics of failure; determine validation test plans; and drive reliable design choices
- Work with design, test, manufacturing quality, supplier quality, and service engineering to identify root causes and drive resolution for failures originating in testing and in the field
- Collaborate closely with mechanical design, optical engineering, thermal engineering, and controls/software teams to ensure reliability is designed into emerging architectures
- Perform reliability modeling, life data analysis, and quantitative predictions to inform design decisions and service life/warranty forecasting
- Provide reliability design guidelines and apply reliability lessons learned to enable continuous improvement across vision hardware programs
Requirements
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Material Engineering, Systems Engineering, Physics, or equivalent experience
- 2+ years of experience working on multi-domain electromechanical systems, such as wipers systems, actuation systems, cleaning mechanisms, pneumatic or fluid delivery systems, thermal management systems, shutter or closure mechanisms, or sealed enclosure assemblies, in automotive, aerospace, medical devices, industrial automation, or related high-reliability applications
- Proficiency in understanding the failure modes and degradation mechanisms of thermo-mechanical-electrical systems, including mechanisms subject to wear, fatigue, sealing degradation, corrosion, condensation, and environmental aging
- Self-driven and focused individual with a proven ability to manage parallel tasks effectively, with a desire to work in a fast-paced environment
- Proven ability to remain engaged, proactive, and positive in tough circumstances, Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D), Aerospace and Defense, Automation, Automotive Assembly, Compensation and Benefits, Continuous Improvement, Cross-Functional, Data Analysis, Data Modeling, Disability Insurance, Electrical Engineering, Electricity, Electromechanical Engineering, Electromechanical Systems, Employee Assistance Plan, Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Forecasting, Health Plan, High Reliability Software, Leading Edge Technology, Manufacturing, Manufacturing Operations, Mechanical Design, Medical Equipment, Optical Engineering, Orthodontics, Payroll Tax, Physics, Problem Solving Skills, Process Improvement, Quality Assurance Methodology, Quality Engineering, Reliability Analysis, Reliability Engineering, Requirements Management, Risk Analysis, Root Cause Analysis, Stock Purchase Plans, System Operations, Systems Administration/Management, Systems Reliability, Test Design, Test Plan/Schedule, Testing, Thermal Management, Usage Analysis, Validation Plan, Validation Testing, Vision Plan
