Job description

A Software Engineer II is a junior engineer who contributes to software development projects by writing code, supporting deployments, and maintaining features for production systems. The engineer participates in the full software development lifecycle including testing, debugging, and deployment support. The engineer applies experience to work independently on assigned tasks and coordinates efforts within the team., Software Development

Delivers and maintains production features that meet team quality standards.

Takes ownership of assigned features end-to-end, making day-to-day implementation decisions independently.

Applies design principles to decompose feature requests and build well-structured solutions.

Independently leverages AI tools to automate routine development work, boost personal productivity, learn new concepts and technologies, explore solution alternatives, and discover root causes of issues.

System Design

Shapes planning and design discussions by evaluating technical tradeoffs and estimating feature complexity.

Maintenance and Ownership

Owns resolution of production issues end-to-end, from triage through root cause analysis to fix.

Enforces team coding standards, flags technical debt, and strengthens the automated test suite.

Conducts thorough code reviews.

Identifies and communicates how features should be tested, automating testing to team standards.

Maintains and troubleshoots CI/CD pipeline configurations for the team’s applications.

Communication and Collaboration

Collaborates effectively across the team, communicating concerns clearly and seeking alignment on technical decisions.

Produces clear documentation and technical diagrams that help the team understand system behavior.

Partners with product and project managers to understand feature requirements and works with users to understand the workflows the software supports.

Ramps up quickly on new technologies and proactively seeks input to unblock progress.

Physical and Other Requirements:

Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist.

Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.

Mobility: The person in this position needs to occasionally move between work sites and inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.

Communicate: Frequently and effectively communicate with others.

PPE: Biohazard laboratory environment that requires use of personal protective equipment in accordance with CDC and OSHA regulations and company policies.

ARUP Policies and Procedures: To conduct self in compliance with all ARUP Policies and Procedures.

Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.

Fine Motor Control: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.

Vision: Having close, far, and peripheral visual acuity to perform a variety of tasks such as make general observations of depth and distance.

Requirements

Required

  • Understanding of how application features and functionality interact within a system.
  • Knowledge of data modeling fundamentals.
  • Foundational understanding of concurrency, distributed systems, optimization, security, and observability.
  • BA/BS in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field and 3+ years of professional technical experience;
  • or AA/AS in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field and 4+ years of professional technical experience; or
  • or High school diploma or equivalent and 5+ years of professional technical experience.

Preferred

  • Experience with FastAPI and designing Rest API’s
  • Experience with Distributed Systems and Queues
  • Experience with Python, MongoDB and AWS (Amazon Web Services)
  • 5 year(s): Experience as a software engineer or equivalent
  • Broad experience in data structures and algorithms, Required
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent or better

Preferred

  • Bachelor’s Degree or better in Computer Science or related field
  • Associates Degree or better in Computer Science or related field
