Job description
We’re looking for a Principal/Staff Engineer to help own the technical direction of our core platform. This is a staff-level IC role for someone who thrives in ambiguity, moves fast, and raises the bar for everyone around them.
You’ll work across systems, infrastructure, and product surfaces - partnering closely with engineering, product, and leadership to scale what’s already working and build what’s next.
This is not a “ticket taker” role. You’ll define problems, design solutions, and ship., * Own the design and evolution of core platform and systems architecture.
- Lead complex technical initiatives end-to-end, from concept to production.
- Make high-leverage technical decisions that balance speed, reliability, and scale.
- Raise the technical bar through design reviews, mentoring, and hands-on leadership.
- Partner closely with product to translate business needs into robust technical solutions.
- Identify and resolve performance, scalability, and reliability bottlenecks.
- Help define engineering best practices as we scale the team and platform., As a Senior Software Engineer, AI Automations at Retell, you will build and own the internal systems that power how the company operates, sells, hires, and stays compliant.

You’ll work directly with founders and functional leaders to turn manual, error-prone processes into scalable, reliable systems using modern tooling, APIs, and LLMs.
This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys full-stack development, moves quickly in 0-1 environments, and wants to deeply understand how a fast-growing AI company actually runs.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIESBuild Core Business Automations
- Design and implement internal tools and workflows that automate key business processes across the company.
- Own systems end-to-end: requirements, architecture, implementation, deployment, and iteration.

- Build resume ingestion and candidate evaluation pipelines, including extracting signals and structured attributes from resumes.
- Implement candidate scoring systems to estimate likelihood of passing interviews.
- Develop AI-assisted recruiting tools (candidate screening, recruiter assistants, interview coordination).

- Reduce operational overhead by replacing manual processes with robust internal systems.
GTM & Revenue Engineering
- Build and maintain automations across CRM and GTM systems.
- Implement customer lifecycle automations across signup, onboarding, expansion, and renewal.
- Support targeted website, ads, and email personalization workflows.
- Partner closely with GTM teams to ship tools that directly impact revenue efficiency.
Integrations & Platforms
- Integrate with third-party systems
- Design APIs and internal services that scale company growth.
Requirements
- You have 9+ years of experience building and operating production systems.
- You’ve operated at Staff or Principal level (or equivalent scope), even if the title wasn’t official.
- You’re strong in systems design and can reason clearly about tradeoffs.
- You move fast but care deeply about correctness, reliability, and maintainability.
- You’re comfortable owning ambiguous problems and defining the path forward.
- You’ve built or scaled platforms used by real customers at meaningful volume.
- You enjoy being hands-on - writing code, reviewing designs, and unblocking teams.
Bonus points if you’ve worked with: distributed systems, Voice AI, real-time systems, APIs at scale, infra/platform work, or developer-facing products., * Have a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a closely related technical field.
- Have 2+ years of full-stack professional software engineering experience
- You’ve worked with React and Python for 1+ year and are comfortable building and iterating on user-facing features.
- Have 1+ year of startup experience and are comfortable with ambiguity and fast iteration.
- Are strong across backend, frontend, and integrations, not just one layer.
- Enjoy working on internal tools that directly impact how teams operate.
- Can translate messy business problems into clean technical systems.
- Move quickly on 0-1 projects without needing heavy process or direction.
- Communicate clearly with non-engineering stakeholders and cross-functional partners.
- Prefer ownership and responsibility over narrowly scoped tickets.
- Experience partnering closely with GTM, Ops, Finance, or Legal teams is a plus
- Prior work on internal tooling, automation platforms, or workflow systems is a plus
- Hands-on experience with CRM, billing, or compliance-related systems is a plus
