Job description
John Smedley is looking for an enthusiastic IT Technician Intern to join our team for a 12-month placement. You will gain hands-on experience across IT support, infrastructure, business systems, reporting and project delivery.
You will help keep our technology running smoothly, support colleagues across the business and work with systems used in our offices, warehouse, production and e-commerce operations. You will also provide administrative, transactional and entry-level support for a major business project being delivered over the next 24 months.
No previous professional IT experience is required. We are looking for someone with a genuine interest in technology, a logical approach to problem-solving and the motivation to learn. What you’ll be doing
- Monitor the IT helpdesk, respond to requests and keep colleagues updated.
- Resolve login, password, account, permission and access issues.
- Troubleshoot Microsoft 365, Outlook, Wi-Fi, wired connections, VPN and Remote Desktop.
- Diagnose basic faults affecting laptops, desktops, mobile phones, tablets and warehouse scanners.
- Support office, production and thermal label printers, including consumables and supplier repairs.
- Create and maintain user accounts, permissions and distribution lists.
- Support employee onboarding and offboarding.
- Prepare laptops, install software, apply updates and configure user profiles.
- Set up mobile phones and tablets, including email, applications, security settings and SIM replacements.
- Help run operational reports, prepare and cleanse data, update templates and support dashboard refreshes.
- Maintain asset registers, hardware records, licence lists and technical guides.
- Monitor IT stock, raise purchase requests and check deliveries.
- Assist with device rollouts, software upgrades, system testing and other IT improvements.
Major project support
As part of the placement, you will support a significant business project through entry-level coordination and administration. This may include:
- Updating trackers, records and project documentation.
- Supporting data entry, validation and cleansing.
- Arranging meetings and recording actions.
- Following up on routine tasks and outstanding information.
- Assisting with system testing, device rollouts and user-readiness activities.
- Providing general administrative and transactional support to the project team.

You are not expected to know all these systems before joining-we will support you as you learn., * A structured 12-month internship or graduate placement.
- Broad, hands-on experience within a working IT department.
- Exposure to technical support, infrastructure, reporting and project delivery.
- Guidance from experienced IT colleagues.
- Four days per week working on site.
- 32 days’ holiday, including public holidays.

Requirements
Are you studying-or have you recently completed-a qualification in IT, Computer Science, Computing, Infrastructure, Networking or a related subject? Would you like to turn your technical knowledge into practical experience within a successful British business?, Ideally, you will be studying or have recently completed a degree or other qualification in IT, Computer Science, Computing, Infrastructure, Networking or a related field. We also welcome applicants with relevant vocational study or practical knowledge gained through personal projects, troubleshooting or a home lab.
You will bring:
- A genuine interest in IT support, infrastructure, networking or data systems.
- General knowledge of Windows, Microsoft 365 and mobile devices.
- A logical and methodical approach to problem-solving.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Strong attention to detail, particularly when handling data, permissions and documentation.
- The ability to organise tasks and follow processes accurately.
- A positive attitude and willingness to learn and take ownership.
