Job description

We are currently recruiting for an experienced Performance Engineer to join a leading organisation within the rail rolling stock industry, based at their Edinburgh site. This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer with a background in fleet performance, reliability, systems engineering or rolling stock to take on a key role focused on improving fleet reliability, availability and technical performance. Reporting to the Performance Manager, you will play a pivotal role in investigating safety, reliability and technical issues across the fleet, using data, engineering expertise and structured problem-solving techniques to identify root causes and deliver sustainable improvements. You will work closely with engineering, maintenance, production, suppliers and the client to identify trends, implement technical improvements and ensure the fleet continues to operate safely, reliably and efficiently., Monitor and report on fleet, vehicle and material performance, identifying opportunities to improve reliability and availability.

  • Review in-service failures, vehicle availability, maintenance records, defects and operational data on a daily basis.
  • Investigate defective components and materials to establish root causes and identify recurring failure trends.
  • Lead investigations into technical incidents and safety-related defects, ensuring appropriate actions are identified, recorded and progressed.
  • Use fleet management, maintenance and vehicle data systems to undertake detailed trend analysis of vehicle systems and component failures.
  • Prepare detailed technical reports and present findings at technical, operational and customer meetings.
  • Attend daily, weekly and monthly performance and client meetings as required.
  • Produce engineering, performance and business reports to support operational and management decision-making.
  • Work closely with suppliers to ensure warranty issues are investigated and resolved promptly, with effective corrective actions implemented.
  • Provide materials engineering support and technical problem-solving assistance to engineering and procurement teams.
  • Identify and recommend modifications and engineering improvements to enhance fleet reliability and performance.
  • Support the engineering change process, ensuring modifications and technical changes are appropriately managed and implemented.
  • Produce detailed technical investigation reports relating to significant safety, reliability and technical faults.
  • Use specialist measurement and monitoring equipment to support the diagnosis and investigation of on-vehicle faults.
  • Produce, manage and maintain accurate reliability and availability data to support performance reviews and customer discussions.
  • Work closely with the Production Manager to prioritise repairs, modifications and engineering campaigns, providing supporting technical documentation where required.
  • Work with the Maintenance Engineer to ensure maintenance documentation remains accurate and up to date, while resolving technical queries efficiently.
  • Support the development and delivery of technical training for engineering, maintenance and operational personnel.
  • Build strong working relationships across engineering, maintenance, production, suppliers and customer teams to ensure effective resolution of technical issues.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives across fleet performance, reliability and maintenance processes.

Requirements

We are looking for an analytical and solutions-focused engineer who enjoys investigating complex technical issues and turning data and engineering insight into practical improvements. You will ideally have experience within a rail, rolling stock, fleet, systems, reliability, maintenance or similar engineering environment, with a proven ability to investigate failures, identify root causes and implement effective solutions.

Essential Experience & Qualifications

  • HND or above in an engineering-related discipline.
  • Experience working within a systems reliability, fleet performance or engineering performance environment.
  • Experience analysing technical, maintenance or vehicle data to identify trends and recurring failures.
  • Experience producing clear and detailed technical investigation reports.
  • Strong IT skills, with the ability to quickly learn and utilise new software and data systems.
  • Proven ability to plan, organise and prioritise workload effectively.
  • Ability to understand and adopt new technologies and engineering systems quickly., Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a structured approach to investigating technical issues.
  • Excellent planning and organisational abilities.
  • Confident decision-maker who can assess technical issues and determine appropriate courses of action.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate technical information clearly to a range of stakeholders.
  • Collaborative team player who can build effective relationships and influence others to achieve positive outcomes.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently while also contributing effectively within a wider engineering team.
  • Flexible and adaptable approach, with the ability to manage changing priorities in a fast-paced operational environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to safety, quality and continuous improvement.
  • Leadership and influencing skills, with the ability to support and motivate colleagues and drive actions through to completion.
