Job description

We are seeking an AI-First Software Engineer to join the team building FormAssembly. You will work within a dynamic team of Node.js software engineers to design, develop, and ship product features, collaborating closely with the engineering team to ensure that data flows, APIs, and front-end experiences benefit from robust, well-documented integration points.

This is an AI-native engineering role. FormAssembly integrates AI capabilities at the product level. You will be authoring specifications before implementation and using AI-assisted engineering tools such as Claude Code to drive development from those specs. Candidates should be able to demonstrate this working style with real examples from their own work.

You will develop robust backend services and data pipelines on PostgreSQL, ensure data governance, compliance, and security best practices when handling sensitive data, and collaborate with DevOps teams to ensure services are containerized and deployed efficiently on AWS services such as ECS or Kubernetes.

The ideal candidate demonstrates a proactive, collaborative mindset - comfortable interfacing with Product, UX, and executive stakeholders - and thrives in a fast-paced, iterative environment where feedback loops are short and new ideas are welcomed., Feature Development. Design, build, and ship product features for FormAssembly using Node.js, TypeScript, and PostgreSQL, ensuring scalability, observability, and reliable execution in production.

Spec-Driven Development. Author clear technical specifications before implementation, refine them through team review, and use them to drive development so that intent, design decisions, and acceptance criteria are captured before code is written.

AI-Assisted Engineering. Use AI coding tools such as Claude Code as a core part of the development workflow - planning, implementing, testing, and reviewing against specs - while maintaining full ownership of code quality and correctness.

Data Processing. Design schemas and build data pipelines in PostgreSQL to automate the ingestion, transformation, and loading of datasets, ensuring quality, performance, and suitability for product features.

Deployment. Integrate features into existing applications and infrastructure, collaborating with DevOps to ensure efficient, cost-effective deployment on AWS.

Collaboration. Work closely with software engineers, product managers, and other stakeholders to understand business requirements and translate them into effective solutions.

Documentation and Knowledge Sharing. Create and maintain documentation and training materials, mentor other team members, and share best practices to foster a continuous improvement culture.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship. Must be a US-based resident and citizen. Ideally located in an Eastern timezone or willing to work those hours.
  • Background Check. Willing to submit to a rigorous background check in advance of employment, including verification of references, employment history with previous employers, GitHub repository review, and confirmation of LinkedIn profile information.
  • Education. Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, MIS, or a related technical field.
  • Experience. 4-5+ years of hands-on software engineering experience, with a strong focus on AWS.
  • Programming Languages. Proficiency in TypeScript/JavaScript with strong experience building backend services on Node.js.
  • Databases. Strong experience with PostgreSQL, including schema design and query optimization.
  • AI-Assisted Engineering. Demonstrated, hands-on use of AI-assisted engineering with Claude Code (or comparable agentic coding tools), including but not limited to; Skill invocation and creation, MCP creation and integration, and RAG. Combined with spec-driven development - candidates should be prepared to walk through real examples of specs they authored and how they drove AI-assisted implementation from them.
  • Code Review Competency. Serve as a quality gate for human- and AI-generated code alike, turning review into a teaching loop that raises standards for both contributors and prompting practices rather than just blocking bad merges.
  • Software Engineering Practices. Knowledge of software development methodologies, version control systems (e.g., Git), CI/CD, and cloud computing platforms such as AWS.
  • Problem-Solving. Ability to analyze complex problems, break them into smaller, deliverable chunks, identify potential solutions, and design effective approaches.
  • Communication. Clear communication skills to convey technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Agile Methodologies. Proven track record of successful contributions in Agile environments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working remotely across different countries and time zones
  • Experience working with large-scale enterprise clients and delivering secure, high-availability solutions.
  • Familiarity with the Model Context Protocol (MCP) or agentic workflows.
  • Experience with vector search in PostgreSQL (e.g., pgvector).
  • Exposure to production LLM integration (e.g., calling LLM APIs, prompt design, or working on AI-powered product features).
  • Experience working directly with a Product Manager through Agile Ceremonies and Planning Sessions
  • Ability to receive and implement constructive feedback from peers and leadership.
