Job description

We are seeking a Solaris OS Application Expert with active AWS certification and proven hands-on experience migrating Oracle Solaris environments to AWS. This specialist sits at the intersection of deep Unix systems engineering and cloud migration delivery - someone who understands Solaris architecture from Zones and LDOMs to SPARC-era application patterns, and knows how to translate those workloads into AWS-native equivalents. At 90 days, the expectation is a completed Solaris estate inventory, a validated migration wave plan, and at least one non-production Solaris workload running successfully in AWS.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess and document the existing Solaris estate - including Zones, Logical Domains (LDOMs), ZFS storage, and SPARC-dependent applications - to identify migration candidates and map technical dependencies.
  • Design and execute Solaris-to-AWS migration strategies, selecting the appropriate path (rehost, re-platform, refactor) per workload based on application architecture and business SLAs.
  • Configure and manage AWS Application Migration Service (MGN) and AWS Database Migration Service (DMS) to migrate Solaris-based workloads to Linux/AWS target environments.
  • Collaborate with application owners to validate workload compatibility post-migration, resolve OS-level dependencies, and confirm functional parity on AWS.
  • Develop Ansible and shell scripting automation for provisioning, patching, and configuration management of migrated workloads in AWS.
  • Implement and enforce security baselines, host-level firewall rules, IAM policies, and compliance controls across migrated Linux/AWS environments.
  • Troubleshoot complex Solaris and Linux system issues - performance, storage, networking, and application stability - during migration cutover and post-migration steady state.
  • Produce detailed migration runbooks, test plans, and cutover procedures, and communicate wave-by-wave progress to technical leads and project stakeholders.

Requirements

Hands-on Oracle Solaris administration experience in production environments, including Solaris 10/11, Zones, LDOMs, ZFS, and Oracle SPARC hardware.

  • Demonstrated experience leading or substantially contributing to at least one Solaris-to-Linux or Solaris-to-AWS migration, including workload assessment, dependency mapping, and cutover execution.
  • Active AWS certification required - AWS Certified Solutions Architect (Associate or Professional) or AWS Certified SysOps Administrator; Professional level strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency with AWS migration services: AWS Application Migration Service (MGN), AWS Migration Hub, AWS DMS, EC2, VPC, S3, and IAM.
  • Strong scripting skills in Bash, KSH, or Python; hands-on experience with Ansible and/or Puppet for OS automation at enterprise scale.
  • Solid Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) administration skills - the common target OS in Solaris-to-cloud migrations - including patching, performance tuning, and storage management.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with SPARC emulation tools (e.g., Stromasys Charon) for Solaris workloads that cannot be immediately re-platformed.
  • Familiarity with Oracle Database or Oracle Middleware running on Solaris, and strategies for migrating those stacks to AWS RDS or EC2.
  • Working knowledge of Terraform or AWS CloudFormation for infrastructure-as-code provisioning of target AWS environments.
  • Experience with security and monitoring tooling in migration contexts: Tenable, Splunk, Tripwire, or equivalent.
  • Background in large telecom or enterprise environments with strict uptime SLAs, ITIL change management, and ServiceNow-based governance workflows.
