This position provides specialized software engineering, systems development, and geospatial data management expertise for an advanced airport database platform that supports the collection, management, validation, and distribution of airport data throughout the National Airspace System (NAS).The selected candidate will lead the design, development, enhancement, and modernization of mission-critical applications while leveraging Agile development practices, cloud-native technologies, and geospatial data solutions. This role requires expertise in scalable software architecture, GIS-enabled systems, API development, and secure application design to support FAA airport data initiatives.Key ResponsibilitiesSoftware Development & Geospatial SolutionsDesign, develop, enhance, and maintain applications and system modules supporting the FAA airport data portfolio.Support geospatial platform modernization initiatives and the integration of multi-format airport survey datasets.Develop and maintain automated data validation, processing, and quality assurance frameworks.Design and implement data distribution architectures supporting:Web-based user applicationsAPIs and web servicesReal-time data exchange and processingDevelop capabilities supporting:Geographic Information Systems (GIS)Airport mapping and visualizationGeospatial calculations and analysisAeronautical survey data managementNavigational Aid (NAVAID) integrationPredictive analytics and reporting toolsSupport implementation of digital Airport Layout Plan (ALP) technologies and geospatial modernization efforts.Cloud Architecture & ModernizationSupport migration and modernization efforts within the FAA Unified Cloud environment.Design and implement cloud-native solutions utilizing:Containerized microservicesDevSecOps practicesContinuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD)API-first architecturesImplement scalable, highly available systems that support current and future operational requirements.Contribute to Zero Trust architecture initiatives and cloud security enhancements.Software Engineering & Configuration ManagementDevelop software using Agile and Scrum methodologies, including:User storiesSprint planningDaily standupsProduct backlog refinementTesting and release managementDevelop system architecture, design specifications, and technical frameworks prior to implementation.Maintain software configuration management and version control repositories.Produce technical documentation supporting design, deployment, testing, and maintenance activities.Participate in and support User Acceptance Testing (UAT) activities.Systems Integration & SecurityEnsure software solutions integrate seamlessly with FAA infrastructure, NAS operational systems, and external airport management platforms.Implement secure coding practices and software security controls in accordance with FAA cybersecurity policies.Support:OWASP secure coding standardsRole-based access control (RBAC)Data encryption in transit and at restSecurity vulnerability remediation and risk mitigationAssist with compliance requirements associated with FAA security and operational standards.Required QualificationsBachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Science, or related technical discipline.Eight (8) years of relevant professional experience.Demonstrated experience with:Full software development lifecycle (SDLC) processesDevelopment of geospatial (GIS) or data-intensive applicationsAPI-first architecture and web service developmentReal-time data processing and distribution systemsCloud-native application developmentContainerized and microservices architecturesSecure coding and application security practicesStrong knowledge of:Agile and Scrum development methodologiesSoftware version control and configuration managementGeospatial datasets, imagery, and survey data formatsUser acceptance testing and software quality assurance processesScalable system architecture and enterprise integrationAbility to manage and optimize complex geospatial datasets.Ability to support integration with FAA and NAS operational systems.Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.Ability to obtain and maintain FAA Personal Identity Verification (PIV) credentials and access Sensitive Unclassified Information (SUI).Preferred QualificationsExperience supporting FAA programs or federal aviation-related data systems.Experience with Esri ArcGIS or comparable GIS development platforms.Experience supporting Digital Airport Layout Plan (ALP) development and implementation.Experience with:KubernetesOpenShiftDockerFederal cloud environmentsExperience supporting airport operations, aeronautical information systems, or aviation data management programs.Knowledge of FAA enterprise architecture and aviation data standards.Education & Experience EquivalenciesThe following substitutions may be applied:Master’s degree in a related discipline may substitute for two (2) years of required experience.Ph.D. in a related discipline may substitute for four (4) years of required experience.Eight (8) years of additional relevant experience beyond the minimum requirement may substitute for a Bachelor’s degree.Location: Remote within the Washington DC metro areaEmployment Type: Full-TimeSalary Range: $115,000 - $147,000Clearance Requirement: Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.
