As part of the Thermo Fisher Scientific team, you’ll discover meaningful work that makes a positive impact on a global scale. Join our colleagues in bringing our Mission to life every single day to enable our customers to make the world healthier, cleaner and safer. We provide our global teams with the resources needed to achieve individual career goals while helping to take science a step beyond by developing solutions for some of the world’s toughest challenges, like protecting the environment, making sure our food is safe or helping find cures for cancer.

Join our Clinical Sequencing Division (CSD) at Thermo Fisher Scientific, where you’ll play a critical role in developing and delivering automated next-generation sequencing (NGS) solutions to our customers. As a Systems Design Engineer II, you’ll work at the intersection of software, automation, instrumentation, and molecular biology to integrate, test, troubleshoot, and validate sophisticated clinical sequencing systems.

Your contributions will help ensure that integrated sequencing workflows perform reliably from assay setup through data generation and support the delivery of robust automated solutions to clinical laboratories. Make meaningful contributions to products that help make the world healthier, cleaner, and safer.

What You Will Do

  • Perform software integration, system testing, and troubleshooting across new and existing next-generation sequencing (NGS) platforms while regularly working in the wet lab to set up and execute sequencing assays, functional runs, and automated laboratory workflows.
  • Conduct hands-on wet-lab activities to support the development, integration, and testing of assays and chemistries on automated NGS workflows.
  • Set up, execute, and evaluate sequencing assays and functional runs on automated clinical sequencing platforms.
  • Partner with software, systems, assay, engineering, and molecular biology teams to identify, reproduce, troubleshoot, and resolve issues spanning software and wet-lab workflows.
  • Support the integration and validation of software releases and new functionality on existing and next-generation NGS platforms.
  • Troubleshoot complex interactions between software, instrumentation, automation, sequencing workflows, assays, and reagents.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering, or another relevant engineering or scientific discipline, with 2+ years of relevant hands-on industry, laboratory, or research experience preferred.
  • Hands-on experience working in a wet-lab environment, including execution of laboratory protocols, assays, or molecular biology workflows.
  • Knowledge of next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies, workflows, and associated laboratory processes strongly preferred.
  • Experience with software integration and testing on complex laboratory, diagnostic, or scientific instrumentation.
  • Experience using programming/scripting for data analysis, test automation, system troubleshooting, or scientific applications; Python preferred.
  • Experience with Linux OS required
  • Excellent project management and cross-functional collaboration skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of global, multidisciplinary teams
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent priorities, Assays, Automation Systems, Biomedical Engineering, Cancer, Clinical Information Systems, Clinical Laboratory, Corporate Policies, Cross-Functional, Data Analysis, Dental Insurance, Food Safety, Hazardous Materials/Substances, Identify Issues, Incentive Programs, Instrumentation, Integration Testing, Life Insurance, Molecular Biology, Multitasking, Next Generation Sequencing (NGS), Office Equipment, Problem Solving Skills, Project/Program Management, Research Laboratory, Scripting (Scripting Languages), Software Testing, Software Validation, Stock Purchase Plans, System Integration (SI), System Test, Systems Engineering, Team Player, Technical/Engineering Design, Test Automation, Test Lab, Testing, Vision Plan
