Job description

You’ll join Helix as a full member of the team from day one. You will work with the product owner, developers, tester and team coach. We will make sure you get the best onboarding we can provide, adapting to your learning style and your level.

What that means in practice: you are a junior, not a spectator. You will work on real services, real integrations and real production software from the start. We will not expect you to know everything, though. You’ll have experienced developers around you to review your work, answer questions and help you understand why things work the way they do.

Some of the things you’ll be doing:

  • Developing and maintaining the microservices in our adapter domain;
  • Working with the development lead and your teammates to design and discuss solutions
  • Writing automated tests and taking part in peer code reviews
  • Assist our colleagues with questions and service requests
  • Shipping your own work through our CI/CD pipelines and helping keep our services healthy in production;
  • Joining the on-call rotation once you’re up to speed;
  • Work on projects and improvements that you are enthusiastic about

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a technical field (Computer Science, HBO ICT or similar);
  • Any relevant work experience is welcome - but study, internship and personal projects are also acceptable - as long as you are passionate about programming and software;
  • A high degree of curiosity - the type of person who sees a problem and won’t stop until they understand it;
  • An independent work ethic: you figure things out on your own, and you know how to ask for help with the right context;
  • Good communication skills in English;
  • You are available to work in the office in Enschede at least 2 days a week (and ideally more during your onboarding phase);
  • Genuine enthusiasm over complex software and a reason why this company is the place you want to work at.

Experience in Kotlin, Go, AWS or GitLab is also welcome, but not required; we are happy to teach you all you need to know about our tech stack., We can only consider applications from Dutch, EU/EEA or Swiss citizens, or from individuals who already hold a valid residence and work permit for the Netherlands.

About the company

Have you ever wondered how a booking made by a travel agency ends up as a real train ticket? That is the kind of problem Team Helix deals with, and we are looking for a new junior team member.

Team Helix owns the adapters of S3 Passenger, our reservation system. Our domain encompasses the microservices that connect our software to the outside world: OSDM, the European rail industry standard and GDS Air, which connects us to the airline distribution systems travel agencies and resellers book through. We translate protocols and data models, handle the edge cases real-world integrations throw at us, and we do so reliably at scale. It requires good domain knowledge of both sides, and a creative mindset to make things work together.

We write our services in Kotlin and Go, run our CI/CD pipelines through GitLab, and run our applications on AWS, Docker, Kubernetes etc. You will get a lot of freedom in your own development environment, and you will be encouraged to use AI, whether that’s for exploring an unfamiliar codebase, writing tests, debugging or getting unstuck. We care about the quality of what you ship, not whether every line was typed entirely by you., Why work at Sqills?

  • Join an enthusiastic, diverse, and agile team of more than 240 colleagues worldwide;
  • Enjoy a flat structure environment with high responsibility and the ability to make an impact;
  • Work in an open, challenging environment with ambitious professionals from different backgrounds;
  • Take advantage of exciting travel and growth opportunities within Sqills and the larger Siemens Mobility organisation;
  • Participate in inspiring company outings with colleagues from North America, Europe, and beyond.
