Job description

As Director of Data and AI, you’ll step into a leadership role covering for a colleague on maternity leave, with scope across our data team. The team spans three functions: Data Analytics, Data Engineering, and ML/AI.

This is a hands-on leadership role. You’ll be managing people, making prioritisation decisions, and serving as the team’s technical and business counterpart. The team is established and strong, and there’s an existing roadmap, but company priorities evolve. You’ll need to manage and prioritise delivery as things change, represent data across the business, and make sure the team is working on what matters most.

You’ll also be the practitioner-side champion of data privacy, working alongside our DPO and data privacy lawyer to ensure privacy-by-design isn’t just policy but also how the team actually works.

You’ll join a purpose-driven, collaborative environment where your leadership directly supports Clue’s mission, user trust, and long-term product strategy.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Lead and manage the data team end to end, with full people management responsibility across analytics, engineering, and ML/AI
  • Own prioritisation across the three functions, making the right trade-offs when delivery demands compete
  • Act as a counterpart for the team, particularly in data engineering and ML/AI: talking through approaches, challenging ideas, and unblocking problems
  • Drive scoping, assessment, and technical direction for new initiatives
  • Champion data privacy as a practitioner, ensuring the team applies privacy-by-design and meets GDPR and regulatory expectations in every piece of work that goes out the door
  • Represent data in management and lead meetings, understanding what other teams need and translating that into delivery priorities

Requirements

  • 8+ years of experience in data, with at least 3 years in a leadership role managing multiple data functions
  • Hands-on leadership experience across multiple data disciplines: analytics, engineering, and ML/AI. You’ve managed teams, not just projects.
  • Strong analytical thinking with experience across both business and product analytics. You can frame the right questions, challenge outputs, and connect analytical work to business outcomes. Comfortable enough with data engineering and ML/AI to have informed conversations and make sensible prioritisation calls.
  • Strong working knowledge of GDPR and data privacy in practice. You take data privacy seriously, and you’ve been the person making sure teams build responsibly, not just compliantly.
  • Experience in a regulated or health-adjacent environment. We work with sensitive health data, and this shapes how everything gets built.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with stakeholders across the business

Benefits & conditions

What we offer:

  • 27+ days of paid time off
  • Urban Sports Club membership
  • Professional and personal development: access to a dedicated development budget and resources to grow in your role
  • Office space: a vibrant office in the heart of Berlin, where collaboration and innovation happen
  • Hybrid work model: the flexibility to work from home while maintaining a strong connection with the team
