Job description

  • Partner with game designers to refine each map’s mechanic, then design a layout where the mechanic drives player decisions.
  • Own each map from paper design through block-out, scripting, iteration, debugging, optimization, and delivery.
  • Balance multiplayer space: sightlines, cover, chokepoints, escape routes, and objective placement.
  • Set the pacing of short play sessions so every match build tension and ends with a clear result.
  • Design NPC movement and patrol paths so AI-driven characters move in a believable way.
  • Script and integrate your own maps in Unity using Unity C#.
  • Design for mobile readability so the gameplay is enjoyable on a small screen.
  • Iterate on maps using playtest feedback and telemetry data.
  • Write and maintain clear level design documentation.
  • Work with QA to find, reproduce, and fix reported issues.
  • Work with the art team so levels reach a high visual bar without losing their gameplay intent.
  • Share knowledge and mentor other designers.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years in a level design role.
  • Shipped at least one full-cycle title, from pre-production to launch, on console, PC, or a major mobile title in a level design role.
  • Proven ability to design within mobile constraints, shown through a shipped mobile title, a shipped mobile mode, or a strong portfolio project.
  • Experience designing competitive multiplayer maps or arenas.
  • Comfortable working in a data-driven, config-based level creation pipeline.
  • Proficient in Unity.
  • Proficient in scripting with Unity C#.
  • Strong grasp of level design fundamentals: spatial flow, pacing, readability, and balance.
  • Able to build quick prototypes.
  • Able to take feedback, act on it, and give clear feedback to others.
  • Able to prioritize tasks and deliver quality work on time.
  • Mandarin Chinese, required for daily work with our client.
  • English at an adequate level, for meetings, documentation, and collaboration with English-speaking colleagues and clients. Native English fluency is not required.

Strongly preferred

  • Console or PC experience on a shipped AA or AAA title.
  • Experience with designing mini games or user-generated content, professional or personal.
  • Experience shipping both single-player and multiplayer levels.

Bonus

  • Experience with other engines and scripting tools, such as Unreal Engine, Blueprints, Lua, or Godot.
  • Experience with 3D modelling tools such as Maya, 3ds Max, or Blender.
  • Experience leading a team of designers.
  • Experience working across multiple studios in a co-development setting.
  • Experience working in an English-speaking environment.
  • Willing to travel and work at our other studios in China when a project needs it.
