Senior Director of Software Engineering

MOGEL, on behalf of a leading edtech company, is seeking a hands-on Senior Director of Software Engineering who combines technical credibility with strong organizational leadership. You should be comfortable challenging architectural decisions, developing Engineering Managers and senior engineers, identifying and growing exceptional talent, and holding teams accountable for quality and delivery. You will need excellent executive communication and presentation skills, with the ability to influence, align, and collaborate across technical and non-technical stakeholders. Success in this role requires someone who is highly organized, comfortable managing competing priorities, and capable of creating a results-driven engineering culture while maintaining a collaborative and respectful leadership approach. What You’ll Do In this role, you will:

• Lead Engineering Managers, Technical Leads, and engineering teams responsible for the delivery of enterprise-scale software products and platforms.
• Partner closely with Product and business leaders to translate product strategy into realistic engineering roadmaps, architecture, and execution plans.
• Own engineering delivery across multiple concurrent initiatives, establishing realistic timelines, managing dependencies, and ensuring teams remain focused on critical priorities.
• Provide technical leadership across architecture, solution design, scalability, performance, security, reliability, and software quality.
• Maintain accountability for key architectural decisions and ensure platforms are designed to perform reliably at enterprise scale.
• Participate in architecture and design discussions while mentoring technical leaders and engineers on complex engineering challenges.
• Evaluate and introduce new technologies, frameworks, tools, and engineering practices that improve productivity, quality, and scalability.
• Build, develop, and retain high-performing engineering teams while creating a culture of accountability, technical excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
• Manage engineering capacity across both full-time employees and external/contract engineering resources.
• Collaborate across Product, Architecture, Engineering, and other stakeholders to identify risks, resolve dependencies, and determine what can realistically be delivered.

• 20+ years of software engineering experience across the design, development, architecture, and delivery of production software.
• 14+ years of engineering leadership experience, including managing, mentoring, and developing high-performing software engineering teams.
• Experience leading an engineering organization of 25+ employees, including Engineering Managers and senior technical leaders.
• Experience managing a combined FTE and contractor budget of $5M+.
• Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or an acceptable combination of education and relevant professional experience.
• Significant experience building and modernizing enterprise-grade platforms and complex applications.
• 10+ years of architecture and engineering experience with Microsoft technologies, object-oriented programming, and database technologies.
• Strong experience designing and building enterprise APIs and web services supporting internal and external integrations.
• Strong understanding of engineering principles related to performance, security, quality, scalability, reliability, redundancy, and fault tolerance.
• Significant experience designing and deploying applications in cloud environments; AWS experience strongly preferred.
• Experience evaluating and adopting modern technologies, architectures, frameworks, and open-source solutions to solve complex business problems at scale.
• Experience with containerization, modern build and deployment practices, CI/CD, and DevOps-oriented engineering environments.
• Proven ability to manage multiple complex initiatives while communicating dependencies, risks, trade-offs, and delivery expectations to stakeholders.
• Strong understanding of the full software development lifecycle within an Agile engineering environment.
• Experience with Content Management Systems (CMS) and/or Learning Management Systems (LMS) is highly desirable.
