Starting date: asapJob Reference409_26_ES_CVC_R1PositionHigh-resolution global climate modeller (R1)Closing DateMonday, 14 September, **Reference409_26_ES_CVC_R1Job titleHigh-resolution global climate modeller (R1)About BSCThe Barcelona Supercomputing Center - Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) is the leading supercomputing center in Spain.It houses MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, was a founding and hosting member of the former European HPC infrastructure PRACE (Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe), and is now hosting entity for EuroHPC JU, the Joint Undertaking that leads large-scale investments and HPC provision in Europe.The mission of BSC is to research, develop and manage information technologies in order to facilitate scientific progress.BSC combines HPC service provision and R&D into both computer and computational science (life, earth and engineering sciences) under one roof, and currently has over ** staff from 60 countries.We are particularly interested for this role in the strengths and lived experiences of women and underrepresented groups to help us avoid perpetuating biases and oversights in science and IT research.In instances of equal merit, the incorporation of the under?represented sex will be favoured.We promote Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, fostering an environment where each and every one of us is appreciated for who we are, regardless of our differences.If you consider that you do not meet all the requirements, we encourage you to continue applying for the job offer.We value diversity of experiences and skills, and you could bring unique perspectives to our team.Context And MissionThe Earth Sciences Department of Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC-ES) led by Prof Francisco Doblas?Reyes develops, among other research tools, global climate models to perform a range of climate experiments at frontier (storm and eddy?resolving) spatial resolutions.The Department is looking for a PhD candidate to assist in the analysis of high?resolution global atmospheric simulations with the atmosphere model IFS.Applicants with a more scientific background are also encouraged.The candidate will conduct a PhD on the role of resolution in the predictability of the winter North Atlantic climate, by conducting an analysing different sets of idealised atmospheric?forced predictions configured at different resolutions.The analysis will contribute to the Consolidator ERC grant PREEDYCT on the role of mesoscale eddies in North Atlantic prediction.Key DutiesConduct several ensembles of simulations with the atmospheric model IFS configured at different resolutionsPerform scientific analysis focused on the impact of resolution on predictive skill and other aspects of prediction quality, like the signal?to?noise ratio and the ratio of predictable componentsConduct mechanistic based analyses to explore whether the changes in prediction skill over continental areas like Europe are linked to a better representation of key atmospheric teleconnection processes.RequirementsEducationBachelor degree in computer sciences, applied mathematics or physics, or any related disciplineWork experience in meteorology/oceanography both at the scientific and technological level will be considered an assetEssential Knowledge and Professional ExperienceAdvanced knowledge in high?level computer languages (especially FORTRAN) and experience with UNIX/LINUX environments, scripting languages (bash, Python …) and debugging tools.Experience working with numerical models of ocean, atmosphere and other Earth system components.Experience in using HPC architectures and parallel programming will be valued.Experience with version control systems (e.g., SVN or Git) will be valued.Fluency in EnglishCompetencesReliable and constructive interpersonal skillsExcellent written and verbal communication skillsAbility to take initiatives, prioritise and work under set deadlinesAbility to work both independently and within a teamConditionsThe position will be located at BSC within the Earth Sciences DepartmentWe offer a full?time contract (35h/week), a good working environment, a highly stimulating environment with state?of?the?art infrastructure, flexible working hours, extensive training plan, restaurant tickets, private health insurance, support to the relocation proceduresDuration: Open?ended contract due to technical and scientific activities linked to the project and budget durationHolidays: 22 days of holidays + 6 personal days + 24th and 31st of December per our collective agreementSalary: we offer a competitive salary commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate and according to the cost of living in BarcelonaStarting date: asap#J-*****-Ljbffr
Requirements
