The DLR Institute of Software Technology sees software as a catalyst for research and innovation. The institute’s staff, currently numbering around 200, make a significant contribution to advancements in the fields of aviation, space, energy, transportation, and security through the development of state-of-the-art software solutions and innovative research. Our areas of competence include reliable and safety-critical software systems, artificial intelligence, high-performance computing and quantum computing, human-system interaction and visualisation, software and systems engineering as well as digital platforms and digital twins.

What to expect In the Flight Software Department, we conduct research and develop reliable and resilient (real-time) software for aircraft and spacecraft. With our expertise in this field, we currently support approximately 20 space missions with software engineering and software quality assurance.

Your tasks

  • research, design and development of innovative AI methods for software quality and product assurance in the space sector
  • evaluation of the selected and developed AI methods in terms of their efficiency and effectiveness compared to conventional processes or methods
  • implementation of the selected AI methods in ongoing space missions
  • advanced academic study with a view to obtaining a PhD in the field of AI methods in software quality assurance
  • responsibility for software quality assurance in national and international space missions (in accordance with required standards such as ECSS)
  • preparation of planning documents for software quality assurance (e.g. Software PA Plan, Software Configuration Management Plan, Software PA Milestone Report, etc.)
  • publication of research findings in journals and at conferences If you’re passionate about software quality assurance, would like to join our team and help make aerospace software safer in the future, we’d love to hear from you. We’re looking for highly motivated people who are committed to pushing the boundaries of research. With us, you’ll have the opportunity to contribute your own ideas and can look forward to an exciting, friendly and flexible working environment.

Requirements

  • Completed academic university studies (Master / University Diploma) in computer science or engineering (e.g. computer engineering, aerospace engineering) or other courses of study relevant to the job.
  • You have experience in software engineering and quality assurance of software for safety-critical systems.
  • You have experience in software development using C/C++, Python or Rust.
  • You speak and write English fluently.
  • You have experience with the entire development cycle of mission-critical embedded software applications on board (i.e. requirements, design, implementation, testing, qualification).
  • You have practical experience in the application of space quality assurance standards (e.g. ECSS-E40/Q80 or DO-178). We look forward to getting to know you!
