Sr Engineer - Cloud Enablement

The Cloud Enablement team builds and operates the foundational public cloud platform that engineering teams across Target rely on to deliver at enterprise scale. Working primarily on Google Cloud Platform (GCP), the team owns a hardened, standardized cloud foundation spanning compute, Kubernetes, storage, networking, and identity - the core building blocks that power Target’s digital and data-driven experiences. Our mission is to make cloud simple, secure, and cost-effective to consume: we design the opinionated patterns, policies, and guardrails that keep workloads safe and reliable, and we build the APIs, automation, and self-service tooling that let teams adopt and scale cloud services with confidence. Following an infrastructure-as-code philosophy, we treat repeatability, resilience, and security as first-class engineering outcomes rather than afterthoughts. We partner closely with platform and product teams to onboard new workloads, drive cloud cost stewardship, and continuously raise the bar on operational excellence, availability, and readiness for our highest-traffic events. As a lead engineer on this team, you’ll help shape cloud strategy, architect platform capabilities and tooling, and set technical direction that multiplies the productivity of engineers across the company - a high-impact role at the center of how Target builds in the cloud.

As a Senior Engineer on the Cloud Enablement team, you’ll contribute:

What You’ll Do

• Design, build, deploy, and support scalable cloud platform capabilities using cloud services, preferably Google Cloud Platform (GCP), with a strong focus on reliability, security, automation, and developer experience in Golang.
• Implement cloud engineering best practices across resource provisioning, configuration management, monitoring, observability, security, governance, and cost optimization.
• Develop and maintain cloud infrastructure and platform services using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) technologies to automate infrastructure deployment and configuration.
• Build and maintain APIs, automation services, and operational tooling that simplify cloud operations and improve engineering productivity.
• Drive continuous improvement by adopting and advancing automation, orchestration, GitOps, self-service tooling, and reusable platform patterns.
• Apply your technical expertise and stay current with emerging technologies and practices across cloud computing, Kubernetes, platform engineering, and DevOps.
• Evaluate new technologies and contribute to technical decision-making. Initiate and execute research and proof-of-concept activities to assess new technologies and approaches.
• Provide technical guidance for both routine and complex engineering challenges, including troubleshooting issues across cloud infrastructure, networking, IAM, CI/CD, observability, monitoring, logging, and tracing. Escalate issues when appropriate.
• Participate in complex design, construction, automation, migration, and implementation initiatives, ensuring solutions meet architectural, security, compliance, and operational requirements.
• Establish and evolve engineering standards and best practices for monitoring, testing, automation, security, and maintenance of cloud platform components, infrastructure services, and shared engineering capabilities.
• Maintain a strong understanding of the organization’s technical capabilities, cloud infrastructure, platform services, and broader technology environment.

• Four-year degree or equivalent practical experience.
• 6+ years of experience in software development (Golang), cloud engineering (Google Cloud), platform engineering, DevOps, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), or infrastructure engineering, with a focus on cloud services.
• Strong domain knowledge of cloud platforms, including account/project management, compute, storage, databases, networking, serverless technologies, IAM, security, observability, and cost management.
• Hands-on experience with Infrastructure as Code technologies such as Terraform, Pulumi, Crossplane, or similar tools.
• Experience developing APIs, automation, and operational tooling using Golang, Python, and Bash scripting.
• Familiarity with containerization and orchestration technologies including Docker, Kubernetes, and managed Kubernetes platforms such as Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE).
• Experience with observability, monitoring, logging, and tracing technologies such as OpenTelemetry, Grafana, Prometheus, Google Cloud Operations, Splunk, Datadog, or similar platforms.
• Familiarity with Linux environments, virtual machines, containers, networking, DNS, load balancing, and cloud-native runtime environments.
• Ability to communicate and coordinate effectively with project teams, application teams, partners, and stakeholders.
• Strong expertise in analyzing and optimizing system capacity, performance, reliability, scalability, security, and operational health.
• Experience building highly scalable distributed systems, internal developer platforms, automation frameworks, or shared cloud platform services.
