(Senior) Product Engineer (Backend)

As a backend-focused Product Engineer, you’ll play a key role in building reliable, scalable SaaS products that directly improve the way frontline employees work. You’ll take deep ownership of backend systems while staying connected to the broader product and user experience. Working within a cross-functional product squad, you’ll collaborate with product managers, designers, and engineers across backend, frontend, mobile, and AI. The role encourages end-to-end ownership, from understanding user needs and shaping solutions to prototyping, shipping, and measuring impact. You’ll also use modern AI coding tools to expand your reach across unfamiliar parts of the technology stack. • Build and maintain reliable, scalable backend services and product features using Kotlin or Java and modern web frameworks.
• Take ownership of features from initial user problem discovery through development, rollout, and evaluation of their impact.
• Work closely with product managers, designers, and engineers to translate ideas and user needs into high-quality shipped experiences.
• Contribute beyond the backend when needed, including web, mobile, infrastructure, and other parts of the product stack.
• Use AI coding assistants to navigate unfamiliar codebases, accelerate development, prototype solutions, and deliver well-structured changes outside your primary specialization.
• Explore user problems through prototypes, instrumentation, experimentation, and collaboration with product or customer-facing teams.
• Help evolve engineering practices toward more end-to-end, product-minded ownership and AI-enabled development.
• Contribute to reliable deployment and infrastructure practices, with opportunities to work with Kubernetes, Helm, messaging systems, and related technologies., * Opportunities for occasional in-person collaboration through team events, workshops, and meetings in Berlin or Stuttgart, with advance notice.

• Professional experience in backend software engineering, with a strong foundation in Kotlin or Java and experience with frameworks such as Micronaut or Spring.
• Experience developing SaaS products, ideally within an Agile and cross-functional product environment.
• A backend specialization combined with a willingness and ability to contribute to frontend, mobile, infrastructure, or other areas when required.
• Familiarity with AI-powered coding tools such as Cursor, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or similar tools, or a strong willingness to incorporate them into your workflow.
• Strong product mindset and ownership mentality, with a focus on understanding user problems and delivering measurable outcomes rather than simply completing technical tickets.
• Ability to work effectively with product managers, designers, engineers, and other stakeholders.
• Strong curiosity, adaptability, engineering judgment, and willingness to learn new technologies and ways of working.
• Experience working with designers, mockups, or prototypes is a plus.
• Experience with instrumentation, experimentation, A/B testing, Grafana, or Mixpanel is a plus.
• Knowledge of Kubernetes and Helm is a plus.
• Experience with PostgreSQL and messaging systems such as RabbitMQ or Apache Kafka is a plus.
