Job description

As part of Saint-Gobain’s Digital Manufacturing Program, the I4.0 Software Engineer plays a critical role in accelerating the digital transformation of manufacturing operations across North America. We are looking for a technology-driven professional who can combine software development, industrial automation, systems integration, and DevOps expertise to deliver innovative solutions that improve production, quality, maintenance, and operational performance.

Key contributions include:

  • Designing, developing, and supporting SCADA, MES, and Industry 4.0 solutions that enable digital manufacturing initiatives.
  • Building scalable applications and user-friendly HMI interfaces using the Ignition platform and related technologies.
  • Integrating manufacturing systems with PLCs, SAP, databases, industrial devices, and third-party applications to facilitate seamless data exchange.
  • Writing and troubleshooting scripts, SQL queries, and automation logic to support enterprise-wide manufacturing processes.
  • Serving as a subject matter expert for production support and critical incident resolution, ensuring the stability and reliability of manufacturing systems.
  • Implementing DevOps best practices, including CI/CD pipelines, automated deployments, monitoring solutions, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Developing automation strategies and scalable integration frameworks to support growth across multiple manufacturing locations.
  • Maintaining system performance, cybersecurity compliance, documentation, and version control standards.
  • Partnering with cross-functional teams to identify opportunities for process optimization and operational excellence.
  • Providing technical leadership, training, and support to end users while promoting engineering best practices and standardized solutions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, Automation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field required.
  • Equivalent combination of education, technical training, and relevant experience will be considered.

Required Knowledge & Skills

  • Experience designing, developing, and supporting solutions using the Ignition platform.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing systems, industrial automation, and data integration concepts.
  • Knowledge of IT infrastructure, networking, and cybersecurity best practices.
  • Familiarity with DevOps methodologies, Agile principles, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Working knowledge of cloud technologies, open-source tools, and modern software development practices.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively both independently and within cross-functional teams.
  • Excellent communication, documentation, and collaboration skills.

Required Experience

  • Experience developing software solutions using Python.
  • Hands-on experience with Ignition development and configuration preferred.
  • Experience working with SQL databases, data modeling, and query development.
  • Knowledge of Java programming and scripting concepts.
  • Experience integrating industrial systems, including PLCs, SCADA, and manufacturing equipment.
  • Understanding of MES applications and manufacturing execution processes.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing plant infrastructure and machine data collection architectures.
  • Experience supporting production environments and troubleshooting complex system issues.
