Job description
- Creating the interfaces and analysis tools that universities make decisions with.
- Translating client objectives to working products
- Leading and working with team members on development projects.
- Recognising and instigating changes to create new services and improve existing ones.
- Proactively handling issues raised by clients and team members.
The work is mainly JavaScript and HTML on the front end and Python where the analysis sits. You do not need to have direct technical experience with these systems to apply.
Requirements
- Creativity and lateral thinking. Much of your work will be novel, this means not relying on what has been done before but creating something brand new.
- Have (or be predicted to achieve) at least a 2:1 degree in a STEM subject (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) subject.
- Ability to see things from the client’s perspective. What do they think when they first open the dashboard? What could they misinterpret? How do we make our services something they want to use?
- You think in numbers not just in pictures. This isn’t a pure design job. You need to understand what the data is and translate it accurately.
- Experience with data. You will be working with many different large data sets and need to be able to assess and interpret this data accurately.
- Strong initiative. We need someone who will speak up about solutions to problems we haven’t even considered and be confident to point out issues in what we’re doing.
- You go and find the work. We’ll point you in a direction. We won’t hand you a task list.
- A passion for building things. You care and take responsibility for the quality of your work and not just finishing a task.

About the company
£32,000 + profit share · Four-day week (Mon-Thu) · Fully remote or at our Bristol office · UK-based
A university is one of the most complicated machines in the country. Hundreds of rooms, tens of thousands of people and hundreds of thousands of events.
At Escentral we work with more than seventy universities and colleges who have brought us in to find out what is happening inside that machine. To help improve their service to students and staff, make smarter financial decisions and prepare for the future.
That work only counts when people can understand what we’re telling them. That is what this role is for. You’ll be responsible for how people view and interact with data, including leading development projects, designing interfaces and creating them.
