Requirements

SAP (Senior Authorised Person) authorisation currently held under a recognised HV safety rules set (DNO, TO, or private network).

  • Must have proven commissioning and switching experience up to and including 132kV. Experience limited to 66kV or below does not meet this requirement.
  • Full UK driving licence
  • Willing to travel UK-wide and stay away during the week.

Essential Experience required

Protection engineering

  • Relay configuration and settings implementation (Siemens / ABB / GE / Schneider / Reyrolle) - candidates should be able to name specific projects.
  • Understanding of differential, distance/zone, and busbar protection - beyond simply following a spec sheet.
  • Discrimination / grading - has the candidate written or reviewed a grading chart?

Test equipment

  • Omicron CPC 100 - hands-on primary injection experience.
  • Omicron Test Universe / CMC-series - relay testing, with project examples.
  • CT and VT analysis - Omicron CT Analyzer or equivalent; candidate should know what parameters they test.
  • TESTRANO 600 or similar - transformer testing (turns ratio, winding resistance, tan delta).

Functionality and switching

  • AC and DC control wiring interpretation and testing - ask for an example they’ve marked up.
  • Isolation, earthing, and proving dead at 11kV-132kV - should be able to describe the sequence.
  • Switching schedules - has the candidate written one?
  • Site commissioning through to energisation, start to finish, with no gaps in experience.

Authorisation & compliance

  • Experience issuing safety documents (Permit to Work, Sanction for Test) - ask for an example.
  • Understanding of EAWR 1989, HSE-HV-001, HSG230, and BS 6626.

Desirable

  • IEC 61850 / GOOSE commissioning experience
  • Partial discharge diagnostics (online PD survey) - this is Robinson HVPD’s core specialism
  • Cable fault location
  • Cable jointing awareness or experience
  • DNO/TO authorisations (e.g. NG Person (Substations), BESC AME)
  • Formal electrical qualification (HNC/HND/degree) or chartered status (IEng/CEng)
  • COMA or private network O&M agreement experience
