Job description

This is a hands-on senior development role with significant ownership and influence.

You will work closely with our Lead Engineer and CTO, product team and developers to design, build and maintain the systems behind our communications intelligence platform. You will contribute to technical decisions, take ownership of complex features and help the wider development team consistently deliver reliable, well-structured software.

Our core platform uses PHP and Laravel, MariaDB, AWS infrastructure and React/Next.js. We also operate a growing range of AI classifiers and data-processing pipelines that analyse large volumes of customer conversations.

Although this is primarily a backend role, an understanding of modern frontend development and the ability to work across the wider application would be beneficial.

What you’ll be doing

  • Designing, building and maintaining backend services using PHP and Laravel.
  • Taking ownership of new features from technical design through to production.
  • Developing and maintaining APIs, third-party integrations and CRM integrations.
  • Working with large volumes of call, transcript and communications data.
  • Optimising MariaDB queries, database structures and application performance.
  • Building reliable background jobs, queues and event-driven processes.
  • Supporting and improving our AWS-hosted infrastructure.
  • Diagnosing complex production issues and identifying root causes quickly.
  • Improving automated testing, monitoring, logging and deployment processes.
  • Reviewing code and helping establish consistent engineering standards., * The opportunity to influence architecture, engineering practices and product direction.
  • Direct collaboration with the founders and senior leadership team.
  • Work involving AI, communications data and complex real-world integrations.
  • A growing product with an established customer base.
  • 20 days’ annual leave plus UK bank holidays.

Requirements

  • Around five or more years of commercial software development experience, including very strong recent experience with PHP and Laravel.
  • Experience building and maintaining production SaaS applications.
  • Strong knowledge of Laravel architecture, APIs, queues, jobs, events and scheduled processes.
  • Strong SQL skills and practical experience working with MariaDB or MySQL.
  • Experience designing maintainable systems that can handle increasing volumes of data and traffic.
  • Experience working with AWS infrastructure and cloud-hosted applications.
  • A strong understanding of automated testing, version control and deployment workflows.
  • The ability to investigate problems methodically and reach the root cause rather than treating individual symptoms.
  • Confidence taking ownership of technical work and making well-reasoned engineering decisions.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience working effectively as part of a remote development team.

Desirable experience

The following would be helpful but is not essential:

  • React, Next.js or TypeScript.
  • AI classifiers, large language models or machine-learning pipelines.
  • Processing transcription, telephony or other high-volume communications data.
  • Event-driven systems, WebSockets or real-time application features.
  • CRM, telephony or property-technology integrations.
  • AWS services such as S3, RDS, EC2, Lambda, ECS or CloudWatch.
  • Application security, data protection and GDPR-sensitive systems.
  • Technical leadership or mentoring other developers.

How we work

We are a small, ambitious and highly collaborative team. Everyone has the opportunity to influence how the product and technology develop.

As a remote team, we value people who communicate clearly, take responsibility for their work and raise issues early. You should be comfortable working independently while remaining visible and connected to the wider team.

We are looking for someone who balances speed with quality, challenges assumptions constructively and genuinely wants to understand the customer and business problem behind the code., * Have you worked professionally with Laravel 10 or later?

  • Have you designed or maintained REST APIs in a production environment?
  • Have you worked with relational databases such as MySQL/MariaDB at production scale?
  • Have you written automated tests using Pest or PHPUnit?
  • Have you used queues, jobs and workers in a production Laravel application?
  • Have you used Redis in a production environment?
  • Have you worked on an established/legacy codebase rather than only greenfield projects?
  • Have you been responsible for reviewing other developers’ code?
  • Are you comfortable working with Git-based code review and CI/CD workflows?
  • Do you have any experience working with linux servers?
  • Do you have any experience working with Amazon Web Services?
  • Tell us briefly about the most technically challenging Laravel application you’ve worked on. What made it challenging, and what were you responsible for?
  • You’ve inherited a large Laravel application with limited test coverage and significant technical debt. How would you approach improving it while continuing to deliver new features?

Experience:

  • Laravel: 4 years (required)

Benefits & conditions

  • A system or product you have taken significant ownership of.
  • Your experience diagnosing and resolving a difficult production or performance issue.
