Civilian Investigator - Major Incident Room - 01

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Major Inquiries - Cold Case Homicide Team within Specialist Crime of the Metropolitan Police.

We are looking for civilian investigators who will manage and record evidential and non-evidential material in major investigations using the HOLMES (Home Office Large Major Enquiry System) platform, ensuring accuracy and compliance. The role holder will deliver specialist investigative expertise to support the reinvestigation of non-recent unsolved homicides and major crime, ensuring high standards of investigation in line with legislative and policy requirements. They will also Exercise delegated investigative powers under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act (PACE) to gather, preserve, and present evidence that contributes to the resolution of serious crime cases. The role supports Cold Case Homicide detectives in progressing cases through the criminal justice process, including trial preparation and court proceedings and provides support to new homicide investigations, ensuring consistency and professionalism in evidence gathering, analysis, and case progression.

It’s these skilled people who provide the organisational capability to police London., Read, receive and manage investigation material using the HOLMES system to ensure accurate case records and facilitate investigative progress. Review and categorise sensitive evidential material in line with disclosure strategies set by the Senior Investigating Officer (SIO) and Disclosure Manager to meet legal obligations. Conduct planned investigations into unsolved and current homicide cases, ensuring compliance with legislation, policy, and best practice to deliver accurate and timely case outcomes. Liaise with the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) to provide case documents and disclosure material, ensuring compliance with statutory requirements and timelines. Prepare case files, redact documents, and maintain accurate records to enable successful prosecutions. Provide information and updates to victims, witnesses, and defendants (where appropriate) to support case progression and safeguarding. Attend meetings with CPS, internal colleagues, and partner agencies to share information, agree next steps, and resolve investigative issues. Do you have experience in Microsoft Word?, Knowledge and understanding of criminal law and investigative procedures (e.g. Criminal Procedure and Investigations Act, Police and Criminal Evidence Act, Children’s Act, Human Rights Act). Understanding of data protection legislation and information management in criminal investigations. Proficient in using HOLMES (versions 17 - 19) for indexing, registering, and managing investigation material. Must have experience as a Holmes reader/receiver. Able to interpret, summarise, and present complex information clearly to support investigative decision-making. Skilled in handling sensitive and distressing material with professionalism and resilience. Confident in engaging with victims, witnesses, and professional stakeholders via phone, email, and face-to-face communication. Competent user of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) and police systems such as CONNECT and IIP (Integrated Information Platform). Strong attention to detail with the ability to identify errors and omissions in investigative submissions. Strong written and verbal English skills, able to provide clear and precise direction. Experience working in a Major Incident Room or similar investigation support environment. PIP2 accreditation with recent (within last 5 years) experience of conducting and managing complex investigations. Experience gathering, analysing, and evaluating intelligence and information from multiple sources. Experience of working on serious and complex investigations Experience identifying reasonable lines of enquiry to support Cold Case Homicide Team cases.

Essential for the role: Accredited Professionalising Investigation Programme (PIP) Level 2 is a mandatory qualification for this role. Willingness to complete further HOLMES and other relevant system training as required.
