Job description

The successful applicant will carry out independent research and supervision activities in the field of Statistics and Machine Learning at Institute for Statistics and Mathematics which also features a strong group in Bayesian statistics, see https://www.wu.ac.at/en/statmath/ .

We are particularly interested in researchers whose scientific work focuses on the methodological aspects of modern statistical techniques and machine learning algorithms and their application to the analysis of large data sets. A proven interest in applications from the fields of economics, finance or business is an advantage, but candidates working in other application areas in the fields of social or environmental science are also encouraged to apply. In line with the Collective Bargaining Agreement, teaching duties associated with the position initially comprise 4 hours per week; they can be in quantitative education programs at WU at all levels (bachelor, master and PhD).

A qualification agreement can be concluded after a contract duration of two years (§ 27 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement). Pursuant to WU’s Personnel Development Plan, this position can only be fixed-term for up to six years. Once all objectives agreed upon in the qualification agreement have been fulfilled, the employment relationship can be made permanent. Employees who have successfully completed a qualification agreement are classified as associate professors. From an organizational regulation perspective they belong to the group of professors. Three years after successful completion of the qualification agreement, they are entitled to apply for promotion to full professor according to the By-Laws of WU § 43a., Required submission materials: a) Cover letter b) CV (incl. list of publications and talks) c) Research statement (research interests and future agenda, max. 3 pages) d) Teaching statement (teaching experience and teaching philosophy) e) Two reference letters or names from at least two references

Requirements

You hold a diploma or an MSc as well as a PhD in mathematics, statistics or equivalent. We expect scientific excellence, documented by publications in internationally recognized journals and international experience (a PhD from a non-Austrian university or at least one year of working experience on the postdoc level at a non-Austrian university and a good international network). First managerial experience (e.g. acquisition and/or management of third-party projects) is an advantage. German language skills are not a prerequisite, but we expect the willingness to acquire proficiency in German over time.

The minimum monthly gross salary amounts to €4.351,90 (14 times per year). This salary may be adjusted based on equivalent prior work experience. In addition, we offer a wide range of attractive social benefits.
