The Systems Engineering Manager / Head of Systems Engineering is responsible for leading the systems engineering team and managing the design and development of BESS architectures, ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements. This position will work cross-functionally to provide technical leadership in integrating battery, power electronics, energy management, and control systems. Other duties include engaging with customers, partners, and regulatory bodies to align product development and market needs. This is a hands-on, technical leadership role.
Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, Control Systems, or a related field. \n

Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, Control Systems, or a related field. A Ph.D. is a plus; \n
-
15+ years of experience in system engineering, power electronics, energy storage, or related fields; \n
-
Minimum of 5+ years of experience working with relevant batter storage technologies; \n
-
Proven track record in leading the development and deployment of large-scale energy storage projects; \n
-
Strong expertise in BESS architectures, power conversion systems, and battery technologies; \n
-
Proficiency in system modeling and simulation tools (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink, PSCAD, PLECS); \n
-
Experience with EMS, SCADA, and communication protocols (Modbus, DNP3, IEC 61850); \n

Knowledge of safety, compliance, and grid interconnection standards; \n

Strong problem-solving and analytical skills; \n
-
Must have previous experience leading a team with effective communication and leadership abilities; \n

Ability to work in a fast-paced, cross-functional environment; \n

Strategic thinking with a focus on innovation and continuous improvement; and \n

Must have the ability to travel, up to 50% of the time, with some international travel, as needed. \n
Benefits & conditions
This is a remote position. Standard working hours are Monday through Friday, from 8:00am to 5:00pm or 9:00am to 6:00pm Local Time. Regular evening or early morning (outside normal working hours) work may be required, for example to coordinate with our global headquarters based in China, or as other business circumstances dictate. This position is expected to travel up to 50% of the time, with some international travel, as needed.

What you’ll be doing:
\n
\n \n

Lead the design and development of BESS architectures, ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements; \n
-
Define system specifications, component selection criteria, and integration strategies; \n
-
Develop models and simulations to optimize system performance, efficiency, and reliability, including Simulations/Modelling (Arc Flash, Protection Coordination, Transient Analysis, System Integration) and Software (ETAP, Matlab, Visio, AutoCAD, etc.); \n

Guide the development of modular, scalable, and future-proof system architectures for different products; \n
-
Provide technical leadership in integrating battery, power electronics, energy management, and control systems; \n
-
Collaborate with hardware, software, and firmware teams to optimize performance and interoperability; \n
-
Drive standardization across projects, ensuring consistency in engineering practices and design principles; \n
-
Support technology roadmap development and innovation strategies for next- ESS; \n
-
Oversee system-level validation, including hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) and field testing; \n
-
Ensure adherence to safety and compliance standards (UL 9540, IEC 62933, IEEE 1547, NFPA 855, etc.); \n
-
Define and execute failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) to mitigate risks in system design; \n
-
Work closely with certification bodies and regulatory agencies to ensure product approvals; \n
-
Support Seismic integration and Thermal validation efforts; \n
-
Define grid interconnection requirements and ensure compliance with local and international grid codes; \n
-
Collaborate with EMS (Energy Management System) providers (e.g., FlexGen) for seamless control system integration; \n
-
Optimize BESS performance for various applications, including frequency regulation, peak shaving, and renewable integration; \n
-
Work closely with R&D, product management, manufacturing, and field service teams to ensure design feasibility and scalability; \n
-
Engage with customers, partners (e.g., Lightshift, Trina Storage, FlexGen), and regulatory bodies to align product development with market needs; \n
-
Drive cost optimization strategies without compromising quality and performance; and \n
-
Provide guidance and leadership for continuous improvement and growth of the team. \n
