Job description

As Senior Embedded Software Engineer, you’ll own embedded software development across the business and be its software authority. You’ll define the software architecture, set development standards, and make sure software quality, documentation and regulatory compliance meet medical-grade requirements.

You’ll work closely with the hardware, systems, verification and regulatory teams on products used in hospitals, critical care wards and frontline clinical settings. This is a key role in a growing medical device company, and your decisions will directly affect both product performance and patient outcomes.

Requirements

  • Extensive experience in several programming languages, including C, C++ and Python
  • Deep experience developing bare-metal and RTOS firmware for memory-constrained microcontrollers
  • Strong knowledge of networking protocols and principles, especially as they apply to cloud computing
  • Proven experience developing wireless communication and remote monitoring systems
  • Advanced skills in engineering simulation and calculation
  • Confident using common engineering tools for design (CAD, schematics, PCB layout), simulation, prototyping and measurement

Regulated-industry experience

You must have experience in medical devices or another regulated industry. We’re looking for hands-on experience developing software in a regulated environment. Medical devices is ideal, but we’ll also consider experience from other safety-critical sectors. You’ll need:

  • Proven experience developing embedded software for medical devices or another regulated industry, such as aerospace or automotive safety
  • Working knowledge of relevant standards and regulatory frameworks, such as ISO 13485, IEC 62304 and IEC 60601, or equivalents
  • A strong understanding of the documentation, traceability and verification required for safety-critical software
  • Experience working with regulatory, quality or verification teams throughout the software development lifecycle
  • The technical credibility to define architecture and set development standards at a senior level

If you come from another safety-critical or regulated sector and want to specialise in medical technology, we’d welcome your application. You’ll need to show real experience of regulated development practices.

About the company

Our client is an innovative medical technology business. They develop critical point-of-care devices for GP surgeries, intensive care units and specialist hospital departments. In these settings, performance, safety and reliability can’t be compromised. Their products help clinicians, extend lives, and are built to work reliably in demanding clinical environments.
