Job description

The candidate will join the McKesson Pharmacy Systems (MPS) R&D organization. The Senior Software Engineer will be focused on driving sound technical design and architectural guidance for the EnterpriseRx® platform, a comprehensive pharmacy workflow solution. The candidate will lead complex technical initiatives from design through delivery, applying deep hands-on expertise while mentoring peers and guiding teams through Agile ceremonies such as user story refinement, technical design discussions, and code reviews.

The candidate will partner with cross-functional stakeholders including Product, QA, and Operations to drive scalable, high-quality software delivery, serving as a technical authority for resolving complex defects and championing engineering best practices. The candidate will work with technologies including Angular, Spring Boot, SQL, Azure, Docker, and AI-assisted engineering tools. Limited travel may be required for team planning events.

Domain Focus - Security, CFM, and Shield

This role will focus on remediating security vulnerabilities and supporting microservices related to Central Fill Management and Drug Utilization Reviews.

What You’ll Do:

  • Provides technical leadership for one or more software engineering teams through the full development lifecycle, defining and refining design requirements with stakeholders, architecting scalable solutions, and ensuring interoperability across services.
  • Applies deep technical expertise to solve complex engineering challenges through diagnostic analysis, operational insight, and product alignment, and codes solutions independently.
  • Serves as technical lead across one or more applications and functional areas, actively participating in technical design and code reviews.
  • Develops and reviews User Stories, and writes and executes unit and integration tests to validate functionality.
  • Remediates defects thoroughly by solving the reported problem, testing to confirm resolution, and leaving the surrounding code in a better state than found.
  • Mentors peers through code reviews, debugging, and refactoring, and establishes standards and best practices for consistency, scalability, and reliability across teams.
  • Identifies and resolves severe security vulnerabilities, contributes to secure-coding and security-by-design strategies, and ensures compliance in a regulated (SOC1/SOC2, PHI) environment.
  • Drives process and productivity improvements in collaboration with cross-functional teams including Product, QA, SREs, Architects, and Project Management, and embeds AI across the SDLC (design, code, test, release, operate).
  • Demonstrates thought leadership through technical guidance, coaching, and participation in senior-leadership discussions, and presents complex topics to business leaders and customers in Sprint Reviews.
  • Understands the retail pharmacy and clinical services domain, learning how customers use McKesson products to manage their business.

Requirements

  • Degree or equivalent and typically requires 7+ years of relevant experience.
  • Typically 7+ years of relevant software-engineering experience. Alternatively, a Master’s plus 4+ years.
  • Object-oriented software engineering and RESTful services. Strong proficiency in Java (17/21+), Spring Boot, and Gradle.
  • Experience with event-driven systems such as Kafka.
  • Microservices design and modular architecture with API-first design and integration (OpenAPI, API gateway/OAuth2).
  • Relational databases and SQL (e.g., Oracle), and familiarity with modern data platforms such as Snowflake a plus.
  • Performance monitoring and observability (logs, metrics, traces, SLOs).
  • SDLC and Agile methodologies (Scrum/Kanban/SAFe); version-control systems and collaborative workflows.

Preferred Skills/Experience:

  • AI-assisted development (GitHub Copilot / Claude Code) and interest in building AI capabilities such as agent orchestration/MCP and Responsible AI.
  • Cloud-native engineering on Azure (or comparable): containers, Infrastructure-as-Code, CI/CD, and progressive delivery / feature management.
  • Modern front-end development with Angular and TypeScript for full-stack contribution.
  • Technical strategy development using real-time metrics, performance data, and incident trends, including architecture visualization (Confluence) and roadmap alignment (JIRA).
  • Manual and automated testing tools and frameworks, with secure-coding and compliance in regulated healthcare environments.
  • Ability to learn and implement new technologies and processes.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
