Job description

Robert Half is seeking a Senior Systems Administrator to support and maintain a complex mix of Linux, Windows, virtualization, cloud, and application environments. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working across a broad technology stack, solving challenging infrastructure issues, and partnering directly with both internal stakeholders and external customers.

You’ll play a key role in system administration, automation, application support, security, performance optimization, and infrastructure projects while helping ensure highly available and secure business-critical environments.

What You’ll Do

  • Administer and support Linux and Windows server environments, including installation, configuration, patching, upgrades, troubleshooting, and performance tuning.
  • Manage core infrastructure services such as Active Directory, Group Policy, IIS, DNS, and related technologies.
  • Support business applications and the underlying infrastructure required to keep them running efficiently.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot virtualized environments, including VMware and similar platforms.
  • Assist with cloud-based infrastructure across Azure, AWS, and other public cloud environments.
  • Develop and maintain automation using tools such as PowerShell, Bash, Python, Ansible, or Terraform.
  • Monitor system health, performance, and capacity while proactively identifying opportunities for improvement.
  • Partner with security teams to implement system hardening, vulnerability remediation, access controls, and patch management best practices.
  • Support backup, recovery, and disaster recovery processes for critical systems and applications.
  • Troubleshoot networking and application connectivity issues involving DNS, DHCP, VPNs, firewalls, and TCP/IP.
  • Participate in infrastructure upgrades, migrations, onboarding efforts, and technology modernization initiatives.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, procedures, and operational runbooks.
  • Serve as a senior technical resource during incidents, projects, and customer-facing engagements.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation supporting production systems as needed.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of hands-on systems administration experience in enterprise, managed services, hosting, or similarly complex environments.
  • Strong experience supporting both Linux and Windows systems.
  • Deep understanding of Active Directory, Group Policy, server lifecycle management, patching, permissions, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience with VMware or other enterprise virtualization technologies.
  • Knowledge of networking fundamentals including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VPNs, and firewall concepts.
  • Experience with scripting and automation using PowerShell plus at least one additional automation or scripting technology.
  • Familiarity with application and web server technologies such as IIS, Tomcat, or similar platforms.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, work independently, and drive issues through resolution.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud.
  • Exposure to Citrix, Remote Desktop Services, or other application delivery platforms.
  • Experience supporting SQL Server or other enterprise database platforms.
  • Knowledge of backup, disaster recovery, and enterprise storage technologies.
  • Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code and configuration management tools.
  • Relevant certifications in Microsoft, VMware, Linux, cloud, or security technologies. Technology Doesn’t Change the World, People Do.®
