We are seeking an enthusiastic and technically capable IT Software Engineer to join our IT team on a two-year fixed-term contract. Working under the direction of senior IT colleagues, you will design, develop, implement and support secure, scalable and maintainable software solutions. Your work will support the organisation’s day-to-day operations and wider digital transformation initiatives. This is an excellent opportunity to contribute across the full software development lifecycle, from understanding user requirements and designing solutions through to development, testing, deployment and ongoing support. You will work with technical and non-technical colleagues to deliver high-quality applications, services and system integrations that meet user needs and organisational standards. What You’ll Be Doing

  • Design, develop and maintain software applications, services and system integrations.
  • Produce clean, efficient, secure and well-documented code in line with agreed standards and good practice.
  • Contribute to the full software development lifecycle, including requirements gathering, design, development, testing, deployment and support.
  • Work with stakeholders to understand and refine requirements and ensure that solutions meet user needs.
  • Develop and maintain application programming interfaces and integrations between IT systems.
  • Design solutions with security, scalability, performance and maintainability in mind.
  • Develop and carry out unit, integration and system testing.
  • Participate in peer code reviews and help maintain agreed coding standards.
  • Diagnose and resolve software defects, application incidents and performance issues.
  • Support user acceptance testing and incorporate feedback into solutions.
  • Support and maintain automated build, test and deployment processes.
  • Manage source code using version control and code repositories such as Git.
  • Maintain applications in production, including software updates, patching, monitoring and problem resolution.
  • Produce and maintain technical documentation, including design specifications, system architecture information and user guidance.
  • Contribute to IT projects and digital initiatives, delivering software components within agreed time, cost and quality requirements.
  • Provide technical advice to colleagues and contribute to solution design and procurement activities where required.
  • Keep up to date with emerging technologies, development tools and software engineering practices.

Requirements

  • Proven experience of software development in a professional environment.
  • Experience with one or more modern programming languages, such as C#, JavaScript, Python or a comparable language.
  • Experience of web technologies, application programming interfaces and system integrations.
  • Experience of designing and working with SQL databases.
  • An understanding of software development lifecycle approaches, including Agile working.
  • Experience using version control systems such as Git.
  • Knowledge of secure coding techniques and application security principles.
  • Experience of software testing, fault diagnosis and problem resolution.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • The ability to communicate technical information clearly to technical and non-technical colleagues.
  • The ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and engage effectively with users and other stakeholders.
  • Experience of working within a structured IT environment and established governance arrangements would be advantageous.
  • A degree, or equivalent qualification or experience, in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Relevant professional or technical certifications would be desirable.
