Job description

Step into this Cleared Full Stack Developer role and build something that matters in Defence & Government.

An established engineering firm in Reading is growing its technical team and needs a Cleared Full Stack Developer who can work across the stack on systems that support national security programmes. This isn’t a generic build. Defence & Government work comes with real constraints: security clearance, strict change control, and code that genuinely has to hold up under scrutiny. The company has built its reputation over years of delivering for government clients, and it’s now expanding its Reading office to keep pace with demand.

Here’s what you’ll be doing:

Design and build features across front end and back end for secure, mission-critical applications

Write clean, well-tested code and review your colleagues’ pull requests with the same rigour

Work closely with architects and security leads to make sure new features meet accreditation requirements

Debug production issues on systems where downtime isn’t an option

Contribute to technical design discussions and help shape how the platform evolves

Document your work clearly, since audits and handovers matter as much as the code itself

Requirements

Active UK security clearance, or eligibility to obtain one

Solid commercial experience across a modern JavaScript or TypeScript stack, plus a back-end language such as C#, Java or Python

Comfort working with relational databases and RESTful or GraphQL APIs

Understanding of secure coding practices, ideally within a regulated or government environment

Ability to explain technical trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders without losing the thread

A methodical approach. In Defence & Government work, shortcuts tend to come back around

Benefits & conditions

£51,000 to £73,000 depending on experience, plus a bonus scheme

Private medical insurance and pension contribution

Generous annual leave with flexible working built around the role

Office-based role in Reading, with a genuine focus on work-life balance rather than just saying it
