Job description

Join a startup Defence & Government company as a Cleared IT Systems Engineer in Cambridge.

Cambridge has quietly become one of the UK’s busiest hubs for defence technology, and the systems holding it together need people who understand security clearance as second nature, not paperwork. This growing Defence & Government company builds and maintains classified IT infrastructure for programmes that can’t afford downtime or a data breach. They need a Cleared IT Systems Engineer who can walk into that environment and just get on with it.

Here’s what you’ll be doing:

Build, configure and maintain secure IT systems across classified and unclassified networks

Troubleshoot infrastructure issues under time pressure, often with no room for a second attempt

Apply accreditation and compliance standards specific to Defence & Government contracts

Support hardware and software deployments across on-site and hybrid environments in Cambridge

Work directly with programme leads to translate security requirements into working systems

Document configurations and changes to a standard that satisfies government audit, Defence & Government work doesn’t follow the boom-and-bust cycle that hits other sectors. Budgets are long-term, the work is mission-critical, and a Cleared IT Systems Engineer with the right clearance stays in demand for years. Cambridge, with its density of defence contractors and research institutions, is as good a base as any to build that career.

Requirements

Active SC clearance (or eligibility, with willingness to undergo vetting)

Solid hands-on experience with Windows Server, networking, and systems administration

Working knowledge of security frameworks used in Defence & Government settings, such as JSP 440 or Cyber Essentials Plus

Comfort operating independently once the brief is clear. Nobody’s holding your hand here

Clear communication with both technical teams and non-technical stakeholders

A methodical approach to documentation and change control
