Senior Software Engineer I

Title- Senior Software Engineer IJob Duties: Contribute to and lead architectural decisions of significant complexity and scope. Research options, meet with stakeholders and other engineers to define requirements, weigh trade-offs, and guide the team toward the most suitable systems we are seeking to build. Advise more junior engineers on our team and other engineers outside of the data engineering team on best practices for building real-time data producers and consumers. This requires expertise on how to write and test efficient code structures, build and operate distributed systems, and establish high quality monitoring and alerting for systems. Design and update deployment processes, analyse infrastructure costs, identify potential improvements, and collaborate with team members to prioritize efforts. Provide direct support to data consumers of replicated data and warehoused events. Share expertise and provide guidance to users in the form of documentation and direct discussion. Help debug data issues and directly interface with cloud provider representatives to raise cloud service concerns. Mentor junior engineers both on our team and across Etsy by introducing newer ideas and technologies to them, reviewing their code and design documents, critiquing with empathy, and helping them solve their own problems. Facilitate design discussions and provide opinions about existing systems as well as propose new ones. Identify areas needing improvement, seek out, and plan long term projects which add value to the team and to Etsy as a whole. Lead and manage projects, collaborate with stakeholders to identify needs, and choose a technical direction that will have the largest impact. Build consensus with other project members along the way. Create new technical documentation and keep older documentation up to date.

Advise management on technical direction, performance issues, and demonstrate proofs of concept to narrow options.REQUIREMENTS: Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Computer and Information Science, or related field and 4 years of relevant experience. Experience to include: Apache Airflow; Java, Python, and Scala; and writing Kafka consumer and producer applications.
