Job description

By joining Alpha Impulsion as a system engineer in the Toulouse office, you will play a key role in the development of AMBER, Alpha Impulsion’s small scale autophage demonstrator for suborbital flight and in-space propulsion.

Reporting to the Chief Product Officer, you will be responsible for the design, integration and validation of the autophage vehicle architecture. You will contribute to the scale-up for orbital launch, by contributing to the progressive integration of more and more complex subsystems.

You will embark on a young project, with the opportunity to build it from start to qualification and exploitation.

Your first project here

Alpha Impulsion is developing a small-scale engine for its demonstrator AMBER. Its goal is to derisk at small scale technologies to be used in the future OPAL engine for in-space activities & GARNET engine for launch vehicles. The results of this demonstration might change the way mini launchers are built, demonstrating performance up to twice that of current propulsion technologies.

Your key responsibilities

As part of your missions, you will be entrusted with the following responsibilities:

  • Lead the design, integration and validation of AMBER system, ground systems, their interfaces and their requirements using an MBSE approach.
  • In collaboration with the Chief Product Officer, define the validation strategy of the system’s requirements towards the first flight of AMBER.
  • Perform technologies trade-off at system and subsystem level to optimise the overall engine and launcher performance, aligning with project constraints (timeline, budget, performance).
  • Manage all system configurations from the BATTLESHIP modular test bench to flight models of increasing performance and complexity, progressively integrating operational and interface requirements into the design.
  • Collaborate with all design teams (propulsion, mechanical, avionics, fluidics) working on AMBER, ensuring that their design follows your requirements and constraints along the development cycle.
  • Manage a growing systems engineer team through the design and qualification of our products.
  • Collaborate with the test team on the various test definition (acceptance, subsystem preliminary tests, firing tests, launch).

Requirements

Do you have experience in Leadership?, Do you have a Master’s degree?, * Master’s degree in aerospace or equivalent.

  • At least three years of experience on similar projects.
  • Applied knowledge of launcher and propulsion subsystems, avionics (real-time control, main control loops, GNC, data acquisition, telemetry) and their testing methodologies (SitL, HitL, etc.)
  • Broad knowledge of thermal solutions (cooling methods), mechanical systems (interfaces, load transmission systems), fluidics (valves, seals), electrical systems (high power systems), and GNC solutions (data pipeline, TVC actuators).
  • Experience using MBSE approach, tools and languages (SysML).

  • Experience in testing and measurement methods used for rocket propulsion.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, with previous experience managing a team and ability to report in traceable technical documentation.
  • Comfortable with a startup environment and Agile frameworks.
  • Professional English required.

Would be a plus

  • Past experience in a commercial micro-launcher company.
  • Past experience with Capella & the Arcadia method.
  • Italian and/or French speaking.

Benefits & conditions

Base salary negotiable based on experience. Additionally, competitive compensation package including meal vouchers, holidays vouchers, 75% public transport reimbursement (versus the usual 50%), sustainable mobility package “Forfait Mobilité Durable”, IT material compensation, team performance bonus. Flexible remote work organisation.
