Shape the Future of Digital Services at DVLA

DVLA Digital delivers some of the UK’s most important public services, supporting millions of drivers, vehicles and transactions every year. As part of a large-scale digital transformation programme, you’ll help operate, secure and continuously improve the network and security infrastructure that underpins critical national services, ensuring they remain resilient, reliable and available around the clock.

As a Senior Infrastructure Operations Engineer, you will play a key role within DVLA’s Network and Security Operations capability, supporting business-critical infrastructure across on-premise, virtualised and cloud-connected environments. You’ll work alongside engineers, suppliers and service teams to diagnose complex incidents, maintain operational performance and drive continuous improvement across network and security services.

As a Senior Infrastructure Operations Engineer, you will:

  • Configure, maintain and troubleshoot enterprise network and security technologies including routers, switches, firewalls, load balancers and Wi-Fi platforms.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex network and security incidents within a live 24/7 operational environment.
  • Support incident, problem and change management activities, working closely with specialist engineering teams.
  • Use monitoring and SIEM platforms to proactively identify issues, reduce operational risk and improve service resilience.
  • Develop and utilise automation and scripting solutions using technologies such as PowerShell, Python and Shell scripting.
  • Coach and support colleagues, sharing technical knowledge and operational best practice.
  • Contribute to continuous service improvement initiatives across network and security operations.

Requirements

  • Strong experience installing, configuring and supporting enterprise networking technologies.
  • Practical expertise managing routers, switches, firewalls, load balancers and wireless infrastructure.
  • Experience operating within Network Operations Centre (NOC) and/or Security Operations Centre (SOC) environments.
  • Proven incident, problem and change management experience using enterprise ITSM tooling.
  • Experience using monitoring, logging and SIEM tools to support operational services.
  • Strong scripting and automation skills using PowerShell, Python, Shell scripting or similar technologies.
  • Experience supporting cloud identity or privileged access technologies such as Microsoft Entra Connect or Privileged Identity Management.
  • CCNA certification (or equivalent practical experience) or willingness to achieve certification within 18 months.

Benefits & conditions

In return, you can expect a flexible working culture, including:

  • Hybrid working with a minimum 60% office attendance requirement.
  • Flexible working options that support work-life balance.
  • Civil Service pension with employer contributions worth approximately 28.9%.
  • 25 days annual leave, increasing to 30 days with service, plus bank holidays and an additional privilege day.
  • Industry-leading learning and development opportunities.
  • Clear digital career pathways and technical communities.
  • On-site gym facilities, nursery, restaurants and coffee bar.
  • Employee Assistance Programme and wellbeing support.
  • Free on-site parking.

Why Join? This is an opportunity to operate and improve the core network and security infrastructure behind services used by millions across the UK. You’ll work on nationally significant platforms, help protect critical public services, and contribute to DVLA’s long-term digital transformation while developing your skills within one of the UK’s largest government technology organisations.
