Job description

Brooksource is seeking a Cyber Security Engineer to support an enterprise vulnerability management and security engineering team within a large financial services organization in Charlotte, NC.

This opportunity is ideal for someone with hands-on experience supporting enterprise vulnerability scanning tools who enjoys troubleshooting technical issues, improving operational processes, and using automation to make security environments more efficient.

The team is responsible for maintaining and engineering the infrastructure behind its vulnerability management platforms, ensuring scanning processes run successfully, identifying gaps in asset coverage, and supporting integrations between security tools.

This is a hands-on security engineering and operations position, not primarily a vulnerability remediation or SOC monitoring role.

Responsibilities

  • Support the day-to-day operation, maintenance, and health of enterprise vulnerability management platforms, including Qualys and related security tools.
  • Monitor vulnerability scanning activities, automated jobs, integrations, and platform health to identify failures or operational issues.
  • Investigate failed scans, missing assets, authentication issues, unhealthy agents, and gaps in vulnerability scanning coverage.
  • Assist with configuring and maintaining scanning schedules, scanner settings, asset scope, and related platform components.
  • Help troubleshoot connectivity, configuration, and integration issues impacting vulnerability scanning and reporting.
  • Use Python, PowerShell, or similar scripting languages to support existing automation and improve repetitive operational tasks.
  • Work with REST APIs and integrations to help validate data exchange between security platforms and enterprise systems.
  • Partner with infrastructure, cloud, network, and security engineering teams to investigate issues and coordinate resolutions.
  • Support vulnerability management reporting, operational documentation, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Gain exposure to emerging Continuous Threat Exposure Management (CTEM) processes and technologies.

Requirements

  • Professional experience in cybersecurity, vulnerability management, security engineering, or a related technical operations role.
  • Hands-on experience with an enterprise vulnerability scanning platform such as Qualys, Tenable, Nessus, Rapid7, InsightVM, or a comparable tool.
  • Experience supporting vulnerability scanning operations, including investigating scan failures, asset coverage gaps, scanner or agent issues, or other platform-related problems.
  • Working knowledge of Python, PowerShell, Bash, or another scripting language, with the ability to create, modify, or troubleshoot basic automation.
  • Strong technical troubleshooting skills and an understanding of networking, operating systems, and enterprise infrastructure.
  • Ability to investigate technical issues, communicate findings, and collaborate with other engineering teams.
  • Willingness to learn new security technologies and take ownership of operational tasks.
  • Ability to work onsite in Charlotte, NC, three days per week.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Direct experience configuring, maintaining, or troubleshooting Qualys VMDR or other Qualys modules.
  • Experience administering vulnerability scanners, managing scan schedules, troubleshooting authentication, or supporting scanner and agent deployments.
  • Experience working with REST APIs or integrating security tools with platforms such as ServiceNow.
  • Familiarity with cloud environments such as AWS or Azure.
  • Exposure to attack surface management, cloud security posture management, or CTEM.
  • Experience with vulnerability management reporting, dashboards, or operational health checks.
  • Relevant cybersecurity certifications such as CompTIA Security+, CySA+, or Qualys certifications.

What We’re Looking For

We’re looking for someone who is naturally curious, enjoys understanding how technical systems work, and takes initiative when something isn’t functioning as expected.

The ideal candidate doesn’t simply review vulnerability reports. They want to understand why a scan failed, why an asset isn’t appearing, why an automated job stopped running, or how a repetitive process could be improved.

You do not need to be an expert in every security tool listed above. Candidates with a strong foundation in vulnerability management operations, troubleshooting, and scripting who are eager to continue developing their technical skills are encouraged to apply.
