Job description

The IBM MQ System Administrator manages enterprise messaging infrastructure across distributed environments. The role focuses on IBM MQ cluster operations, Managed File Transfer (MFT), maintenance, patching, performance optimization, and version upgrades. It also involves automating administration using PowerShell and Linux shell scripts, establishing monitoring capabilities, and investigating message-flow problems and MQ reason-code (MQRC) errors.

Core Responsibilities

IBM MQ Administration

  • Design, configure, operate, and troubleshoot IBM MQ clusters, with attention to workload distribution, resiliency, highavailability, and ongoing cluster maintenance.
  • Deploy and support IBM MQ Managed File Transfer, including agent setup, resource monitors, coordination queue managers, and secure file-transfer arrangements.
  • Perform routine platform upkeep: manage logs, tune queue managers, maintain security settings, apply patches, and execute backup and recovery procedures.
  • Plan and carry out MQ version upgrades across multiple nodes, including application compatibility checks, rolling cluster upgrades, testing, and post-upgrade verification.

Scripting & Automation

  • Use PowerShell to streamline Windows-based MQ administration, including queue-manager provisioning, operational checks, and monitoring.
  • Develop Linux shell scripts (such as Bash or KornShell) for platform operations, log inspection, environment rollout, and cluster maintenance.
  • Build automated deployment routines, system-health checks, alert responses, and other repeatable administrative workflows.

Monitoring & Troubleshooting

  • Implement MQ monitoring solutions and write custom monitoring utilities using MQ interfaces, APIs, or command-line tooling.
  • Troubleshoot application messaging issues by tracing message paths, investigating stalled or disconnected sessions, identifying delivery latency, interpreting MQRC errors, and determining underlying causes.

Security, Collaboration & Documentation

  • Apply knowledge of messaging architectures and MQ security, including TLS, CHLAUTH rules, and connection authentication.
  • Operate effectively within enterprise change-management and control processes.
  • Partner with application and integration teams on messaging practices, flow efficiency, and interface design.
  • Maintain technical standards, configuration records, operating procedures, and upgrade or migration documentation.
  • Required Skills & Experience
  • IBM MQ cluster configuration, operations, maintenance, and problem resolution.
  • IBM MQ Managed File Transfer configuration, monitoring, and operational support.
  • MQ platform administration, including patching, backup and recovery, and performance tuning.
  • End-to-end MQ upgrade planning, implementation, and validation.
  • PowerShell scripting for MQ administration in Windows environments.
  • Linux shell scripting for automated operations, deployments, and health checks.
  • Enterprise MQ monitoring platforms and custom monitoring scripts.
  • MQ application troubleshooting, message-flow analysis, and MQRC error resolution.
  • Additional Eligibility Consideration
  • The position may involve access to U.S. export-controlled items or technology.
  • Candidates should be eligible to obtain any authorization required under applicable U.S. government export-control rules.

Requirements

  • Are you willing to do a background check and drug screen
  • How many years of IBM Middleware experience do you have

Experience:

  • WebSphere: 6 years (Required)
  • middleware: 8 years (Required)
