Job description

As our Senior Systems Administrator, you are the technical lead for our Microsoft 365 and Azure environment and the IT Manager’s right hand. You plan and deliver the migration from on-premises systems to the cloud, keep daily operations running well, help secure our network and firewalls, and supervise one Systems Administrator. This is a hands-on role with real ownership: you design it, you build it, you support it.

What you will do

Core - required

  • Lead the migration of email, file shares, identity, applications, and servers to Microsoft 365 and Azure.
  • Administer Microsoft 365: Exchange Online, SharePoint, OneDrive, Teams, and licensing.
  • Manage identity, access, and devices with Microsoft Entra ID (single sign-on, MFA, Conditional Access, sync with on-premises Active Directory) and Intune.
  • Design, build, and manage Azure resources: virtual machines, networking, storage, backup, and disaster recovery, and keep an eye on cost.
  • Protect users, devices, and mail with Microsoft Defender.
  • Supervise and coach one Systems Administrator, serve as the escalation point for complex problems, and keep documentation current.
  • Keep on-premises servers, virtualization, storage, backups, and monitoring healthy during and after the move.

Requirements

  • 5+ years in systems administration, with 3+ years hands-on in Microsoft 365 and Azure.
  • Experience migrating on-premises workloads (email, file shares, identity, or servers) to the cloud.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Entra ID, Exchange Online, SharePoint, Teams, and Intune.
  • Experience building and managing Azure virtual machines, networking, storage, and backup.
  • Hands-on experience with Microsoft Defender.
  • Windows Server, Active Directory, Group Policy, and virtualization experience.
  • Experience leading, mentoring, or supervising IT staff, and the ability to explain technical topics to non-technical colleagues.
  • Bachelor’s degree in IT or a related field, or equivalent experience.

Nice to have - or willing to learn

  • Enterprise firewalls and networking: security policies, NAT, VPN, VLANs, routing, DNS, and DHCP.
  • PowerShell and automation of administrative work with Microsoft Graph, Power Automate, or Azure Automation.
  • Microsoft Purview, and Microsoft Sentinel or another SIEM.
  • Microsoft 365 Copilot rollouts, or projects built with Copilot Studio or Microsoft Foundry.
  • Microsoft certifications (AZ-104, MS-102, SC-300, MD-102, AZ-500, AI-102), or a network or firewall certification
  • Microsoft 365 tenant or Active Directory consolidation experience.

Benefits & conditions

  • A small, close team where your work is visible and your documentation matters.
  • benefits summary - health, dental, vision, paid time off, certification support]

Full-time, standard business hours, with occasional evening or weekend work for maintenance and shared on-call coverage. Houston, Texas; on-site. Some hands-on work with server and network equipment.

About the company

Lead a company-wide move to Microsoft 365 and Azure, put automation and AI to work, and run IT alongside a small team that notices your work.

American Risk Insurance Company is a Texas-based property and casualty insurer headquartered in Houston. We are a small company with a big technology agenda: moving our systems to Microsoft 365 and Azure, modernizing security, and using automation and AI across the business.
