Job description

The Network Engineer 2 is responsible for supporting, maintaining, and enhancing Berkshire Hathaway Energy’s enterprise network infrastructure. This role focuses on the implementation, operation, and troubleshooting of routed and switched networks, network security technologies, and associated management tools. The position also supports the deployment of new networking technologies and applies automation and scripting to improve operational efficiency, consistency, and scalability. The role contributes to high-availability, secure, and compliant network operations across corporate, data center, and field environments., Configure, support, and troubleshoot enterprise network infrastructure, including routers, switches, wireless systems, and related network services.

Deploy and integrate new network technologies and solutions in alignment with architectural standards, operational requirements, and lifecycle roadmaps.

Implement network changes using established change management, security, and compliance processes.

Develop, maintain, and leverage network automation and scripting solutions to improve consistency, scalability, and operational efficiency.

Monitor network performance and availability, proactively identifying and resolving issues to support reliable operations.

Support network segmentation, routing policies, and access design to meet business and operational requirements.

Participate in network lifecycle activities, including technology evaluations, hardware refreshes, software upgrades, and decommissioning.

Collaborate with engineering, security, systems, and application teams to support enterprise IT and operational technology (OT) connectivity needs.

Maintain accurate and up-to-date network documentation, including diagrams, configurations, standards, and procedures.

Provide Tier 2 escalation support for network incidents and service requests.

Coordinate with vendors and service providers for circuit provisioning, technology implementation, and support engagements.

Participate in on-call rotations and scheduled after-hours maintenance activities as required.

Additional duties as required and assigned.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in information systems, computer science or related technical field or equivalent work experience. (Typically four years of additional related, progressive work experience would be needed for candidates applying for this position who do not possess a bachelor’s degree.

Three or more years additional directly related technical experience is required.

Technical skills including programming, installation, configuration, and inventory management.

Evidence of completion of the CCNA certification or demonstrated equivalent work experience in a large enterprise environment.

Experience with Cisco Identity Services Engine (ISE) supporting network access control, authentication, authorization, and policy enforcement in enterprise environments.

Experience developing and maintaining network automation using Python, YAML, and Ansible to enable infrastructure-as-code, improve reliability, and accelerate delivery of network changes.

Proficiency supporting and implementing WAN routing and LAN switching in enterprise environments, including routing protocols, VLANs, and switched network design principles.

Experience designing, supporting, and troubleshooting enterprise wireless networks, including access point deployment, RF considerations, and user connectivity issues.

Experience working in data center environments, supporting network infrastructure operations including switching, connectivity, hardware installation, and maintenance activities.

Effective oral and written communication skills. Effective analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and projects concurrently.
