Job description
We are seeking an experienced technical architect and analyst to support a legacy modernization initiative involving mainframe applications, PowerBuilder-based systems, and vendor-proposed migration solutions. The ideal candidate will possess deep expertise in legacy application architectures and modernization approaches, with the ability to critically evaluate technical designs, architectural assumptions, and implementation strategies. This role will serve as an independent technical advisor responsible for assessing solution viability, reviewing vendor deliverables, validating architectural decisions, and providing technical analysis to support project governance and decision-making. While a significant portion of the work will involve reviewing contractual deliverables, work products, compliance artifacts, and technical documentation, the consultant must also be capable of performing detailed analysis of PowerBuilder applications, COBOL/mainframe environments, data access architectures, and integration approaches., * Evaluate proposed modernization and migration architectures for technical feasibility, scalability, maintainability, and business alignment.
- Assess vendor claims and technical assumptions regarding application compatibility, data access, and platform migration strategies.
- Analyze PowerBuilder application dependencies, data access methods, and interactions with mainframe-hosted data and services.
- Review COBOL and mainframe architectures to determine impacts associated with data migration, platform modernization, or application refactoring.
- Validate whether existing PowerBuilder applications can effectively operate against non-mainframe data stores and identify remediation requirements where necessary.
- Conduct independent technical assessments of vendor-provided code solutions, design artifacts, and implementation approaches.
- Review technical deliverables, statements of work, architecture documents, and project work products for completeness and compliance with contractual requirements.
- Identify technical risks, gaps, assumptions, and potential implementation challenges.
- Develop findings, recommendations, and executive-level technical assessments to support project governance and stakeholder decision-making.
- Participate in architecture reviews, technical workshops, and vendor discussions as a subject matter expert.
Requirements
Do you have experience in Technical writing within technology?, * 10+ years of experience in enterprise application architecture, systems integration, or modernization initiatives.
- Strong experience with PowerBuilder application architecture, development, and database connectivity.
- Deep understanding of IBM mainframe environments, including COBOL-based applications and associated data platforms.
- Experience evaluating legacy modernization, replatforming, or migration solutions.
- Ability to analyze application-to-data-layer dependencies and assess impacts of database migration strategies.
- Experience reviewing source code, technical designs, and vendor implementation approaches.
- Strong technical writing and documentation review skills.
- Ability to communicate complex technical findings to both technical and executive audiences., * Experience with mainframe-to-distributed platform migrations.
- Familiarity with database modernization and data migration strategies.
- Experience supporting government or regulated-industry technology programs.
- Knowledge of software architecture governance, quality assurance, and compliance review processes.
- Experience serving as an independent verification and validation (IV&V), technical assurance, or solution oversight resource.
